  1. To add i only went to nursing school once and never failed any class. I didn't post this for me because im fine. I posted it for all the others who are being treated unfairly. I expected the responses i got , I work with nurses
  2. lets get the facts straight . I have been a nurse for seven years.Got my lpn and RN on the first try . I made 65K to start..there are others starting at 75K..I personally have seen the programs where only 10 pass out of 40..And there are many other cases like that. I know many people who have completed nursing programs but are being held back because of exit exams. Nursing programs are getting harder and if some of yall get off yall high horses you will not assume people fail because they dont try. Ive had my share of bad teachers.
  3. And the real reason is not because your not smart. Its not because nursing is hard. As a nurse I have seen the pattern, 40 students enter and only 10 graduate. Do you know why? The real reasons why is because of money. Yes MONEY!... Look at the cycle, people failing nursing programs for silly reasons, nursing programs creating exit exams that are unfair and the state boards knows about it. Well people the state boards of nursing and the schools are all part of the reason why so many people fail nursing school. And the reason is all about money. HERE is the FACT... Nurses get paid good money almost 65 to 75k to start, nurses are in demand, So what happens when something is not in demand anymore? The value goes down. People see the amount nurses make, they go to the school, if plenty people pass and graduate, that will throw more nurses into the work field, which will cause the nurses pay to go down, If the nurses pay goes down , guess what happens?? Fewer admissions into the nursing program. Thats right its a cycle, thats the reason why nursing school is getting harder and harder. To keep nursing pay up and to keep people entering nursing programs, the school benefits where poor people who invest their hard earned money into the program suffer. So believe it, its not you. This is the reason why unfair nursing instructers still remain. Shame on nursing.
  4. Is she experiencing anxiety or is it pain? Ive noticed at times patients on vents not having any medication scheduled for pain. How low does the desaturation go? I made the mistake before of calling a code on a patient who was desating, who was laying on there side. They werent in any distress, I was a new nurse then. Now i know that sometimes if a patient lays on their side they may desat, doesnt necessairly mean they are in distress.
  5. ..Solution is very very simple.....CALLER ID...
  6. Stuff like that makes me really really angry...Im not just mad at your charge nurse but also your other co workers, who werent helping you to be able to leave right away. I would proffessionally remind the charge nurse that if you had left earlier you may have seen him. And I would constantly remind her in a proffessional way, and I would also proffessionally remind the staff that worked there that day. However at the same time..this is an opportunity for change for the better for all and I hope you take advantage of it. You have the opportunity to use your situation, to get staff and union and go to management and ecourage them to establish a practice for family emergencies, where an individual can leave right away in a family emergency. You can use your situation to benefit many more future nurses and staff to come. Please try to take advantage of it, so nobody else would have to go throu what you have experienced.
  7. lol thats funny.. people love to be perfect all the time..
  8. Hi as a nurse for about 6 years, I would like to let you know that every nurse has and will make a medication error. That will include you. There are many other mistakes nurses make beside med errors. How does one handle the situation of a med error. How would you like it to be handled if it was you who made the med error? If it was a situation where the patient isnt harmed...Would you present the situation to the nurse who made the error first and see how it can be resolved. Or would you bypass her and write an incident report. Patient safety is and will always be the priority, that is not to be denied. However theres a way to go by doing things. You will understand the best way to resolve an issue, when you start noticing and documenting all the errors you will make as a nurse. Question is will you treat yourself the way you want the others to be treated when they make a mistake.
  9. Um yes you threw her under the bus and it was wrong. Theres two types of errors, intentional and unitentional. Question, was the patient harmed? Was it done intentionally? Or was it done unintentionally?...If the nurse has done it unintentionally, you should have pulled her by the side and discuss it with her. You should have encouraged her on how she could avoid mistakes like that. If she is the type of nurse that is sloppy, then her actions could be considered intentional AFTER you confront her and she continues to give the wrong medication. Was the patient harmed? If so then you should obviously follow the institutions policies. I dont know if your a new nurse, but EVERY nurse makes mistakes, You have and you will also make mistakes. How would you want someone to react to a possible medication error that you have made? Dont throw people under the bus unless they deserve it.
  10. Hi , yes it does get better...However..ive learned alot of things along the way..Here are a couple of things that has made nursing better for me and many other nurses, I still see nurses struggling today who have no clue. 1) wear a watch and check on it constantly, you will be surprised at how you can spend a half an hour or more in a patients room and not realize it. 2) Prioritizing is so important along with your watch..plan your hourly moves and try to accomplish it. For example...I will give meds between 7 and 8, wont pass 8 because i have to do so and so..Hustle to make that happen cause you know there will be interruptions. 3) Avoid unecessary repitition... I see nurses do this all the time..they go to the supply room, get something and are back and forth in there the whole night...Plan ahead assume what you may need, and get as much things as possible in advance so your making less trips. 4) look for short cuts or ways to make things easier, all nurses do it, just make sure when you do its safe and legal. 5) Dont waste time..6) Make sure you take a break, and if you cant make sure you snack on foods through out day or when you feel you need the most boost of energy. 7) Challenge the things you are afraid of or dont know...meaning when you have free time, learn how to use machines that you have used but have issues with, go to codes on your free time, to learn what they do.., look for patterns during the code. If you have never done cpr or been in a serious code, make it a priority that you do.. so that way you can destroy that anxiety. 8 ) And finally learn to say enough is enough, nursing is 24 hours, Do your best and then go home, My limit of staying back is an hour and 15 minutes, after that I am out. Pass it on to the next shift. Cherish the patients that see your hard work and look towards seeing you, these are the ones that are more then thankful for what you are doing for them, these are the ones that can say one word that will remind you that your hard work is appreciated ...:)
  11. hello, i know its hard but the answer to your problem is very simple. Do what you dont want to do now, to gain the experience as a new nurse and to get your foot in the door. If u have to work in psych work in psych, it will first ,get you a job, and second get you in an institution where u may be able to transfer into medsurg later on.
  12. you know something , nobody comes to ever ask the people at the frontline if something is working. I do the same pain reasssessment at my job. It serves very to no little purpose. 1) a pain of 5 for one person is not the same for another person. 2) patients sometimes just guess a number ....ummm maybe its a 6 3) after i give my patient a pain medication and they are sleeping should i wake them up to ask them for a pain number? 4) what do u do with pain numbers of a 10 , when u see the person laughing or half asleep? Do u still document? When is these numbers used? never had a doctor come back and say , umm pain went from a 2 to a 7 , give him morphine stat. We tend to make things that are easy more complicated, a simple question is do u feel the pain medication is helping? And if your pain gets to a point that the medication is not helping , let us know. but as we know if u have an orthopedic patient or sickler they will let u know the pain medication is not working and needs to be changed.
  13. I know this is a difficult time for you, keep calling different agencies, try looking into different areas, definately nursing homes and psych areas, If u drive also look in new jersey and long island. There is a position out there for you. You just have to not give up u will find it. Also consider small doctors offices. and whatever pay your offered take it. Gaining the background experience is more valuable in the longterm then the pay for now. Maybe even working at your old job may open doors for you. there were some recent employees who passed their boards and were hired at kchc. But the most important thing is whatever is offered to you take it no matter what the pay is. You worked so hard to get where your at. A little longer and you will reap the benefits of all your hard work.
  14. Hello im sorry to hear about the problems your having, have u tried agencies? Sometimes going into an area, of nursing your not interested like psych will get you in the door.
  15. where do u work I would love to take that job, where I work the nurse patient ratio if where lucky is 1:8 regularly its 1:9, where lucky if we dont have to do our own fingersticks, discharges and admissions, cna on average have 8 patients, So pleasess do tell me where u work, we can change positions. :)
  16. Please if you feel your hospital has a good nurse to patient ratio in nyc , Let me know Im ready to move from where im at.
  17. Money isnt everything, What is the nurse patient ration at your hospital ?
  18. Hello, Im hoping there are some nurses from nyc who are reading this. I would really love to know, what is your nurse patient ratio , and what hospital has the best nurse to patient ratio in nyc, I would really appreciate it. thk u
  19. hey, In nyc its getting harder to get into a program, theres a friend on this site who got into a nursing program after I recommended that she take a LPN program in Jersey instead. Thats the best thing to do if you can travel. Its easier to get in , and after one year you can take a LPN to RN program. No need to wait, look for a LPN program in Jersey :)
  20. Yes , I cant help it, I have to admit it. After looking and seeing what is happening in the Nursing field, I have to say that this so called Nursing shortage is Man made. It is intentionally created. But for what reason? Of course money. This nursing shortage has its benefits. Hospitals benefit by having one person do a job that two people at least should do. With a nursing shortage, nurses become in demand. And with demand there will be a high starting salary. Some nurses getting out of college with a 2 year degree can start making as much as 70k in nyc. Now that benefits us in that we are getting a high salary, Yay. But it has its disadvantages. All nurses already know that disadvantage which is overworking. But another disadvantage is the patients dont get the needed care that they really need. Which would prevent so many complications, such as bed sores , med errors , death, etc. Now why do i say this nursing shortage is man made? In a time of need, common sense will tell you to produce more. But It seems that that is not the intentions of the nursing world. Every minute the nursing world is finding ways to make it harder for someone to become a ENTRY LEVEL nurse. Heres some examples. 1) Okay now the Nclex passing rate is raised. What was wrong with the last passing rate? Did people who passed with the last passing rate lack something? So now we need a new passing rate? But of course with a new passing rate, that will cut out some people from passing the boards. oy vey 2) Now in NYS , if you are in a RN program, you cannot sit to take the LPN test. And the reasons they gave of course was BS. More ways to reduce the Nursing rate. 3) Theres a "nursing shortage" , and the people heard the call, they came to help, But the more people come, the more harder they make it to get into a program, and the more harder they make it to graduate from a program. There is no difference between a 70 average and 75 average student. and a 74 average person is the same as a 75 average. Lets be real, You learn more in one year as a new nurse, than all the time spent in clinicals. And theres so many wonderful CE programs to build our knowledge base. What is being done to fill this nursing shortage. Nothing really. The pay will be great for the ones that make it. But the work is going to get harder. And the risk will increase for the patients, who is suppose to be our number one concern. But lets think realisticly if the nursing shortage would be solved in a few years from now, If the Nursing World would spit out nurses as the demand calls for. What would happen? If there is no demand then guess what goes down. The Money of course. Im not complaining , im just stating whats obvious. But then when u think about it, patient care is the most important thing. :)
  21. If you could travel to jersey, try getting into a program over there, LPN or RN. Once you get your foot in the door thats the most important thing. Remember Nursing is being advertised as one of the best and highest paid fields to get into. So with that there has been a increase in applications into nursing programs. And alot of colleges are changing there programs to make them more difficult. And know even the state is making it harder on students, now after june of this year students who pass the third semester cannot sit to take the LPN boards.
  22. Hey, Im a present student of city tech, the schools program is okay, its not all that, they ,like im sure other colleges are making their programs much harder to get into and much harder to pass. To tell you the truth I had a friend who wanted to get into nursing, financially a cuny college is better, I told her the best thing to do is to apply to a LPN program in Jersey, after trying to get into LIU, and seeing how much it would cost she took my advice and actually got accepted to three LPN programs in NJ. When shes done all she has to do is transfer to their RN program or find a one year LPN to RN program. Thats the easiest way to get in.
  23. What i do get is that i dont use terms that the present administration likes to popularize. (criminal activity , terrorist) Criminal activity ? Thats to funny . But if we were to really use that concept then basically all Americans are criminals, because basically the settlers came here illegaly , stole the land illegaly , killed the natives illegaly, stole slaves illegaly, So basically , we all just need to pack our bags and go because where all criminals.
  24. Your right but if u think about it and do research on it, the american governments hand has been in many countries, creating economic problems for them. My father works in the fashion industry and he did a report on american companies in other countries, and basically alot of companies go overseas or near, to poor countries, create sweatshops, pay the workers pennies, which destroys their economy.
  25. Low income individuals without health insurance , That problem is caused by the government my friend, they rather spend our tax dollars on new ways to kill people and create new weapons then to find means to take care of their own. Thats why our health care system, and educational system sucks. Your right i dont live near the border but i do live in a city that has a very large amount of illegal aliens. And what affects me is definately not them. I myself dont have health insurance. Thats definately not their fault. Yeah those things are self centered, but those arent things that will stop u from putting food in your mouth or a shelter over your head. I think u know very well what i meant by being self centered. :)
