  1. Male nurses are a lot in demand than us women. All the males in my class got hired right away. It's a solid profession and a lot of males are needed. I have seen them get hired in ED and ICU.
  2. I think NP schools have been around longer than PAs. PA is a very recent thing where people can prescribe and work with the doctors. I personally prefer NPs over PAs. Also NPs can open their own practice in some states vs PAs where they can only work with a doctor. So look into both...compare the pros and cons. Good luck! And also who cares about your grammar
  3. Here in Nyc area no hospitals hire asn but I have seen it happen in some of the hospitals in Newark nj cause no one really wants to work in them. I did a 15 month bsn cause I am older and didn't want to be in school for a long time and yes I did take a lot of loans. Do I regret it? Not at all. If I was younger and had time I would have done asn then bsn and then msn. So something to think about...
  4. Manhattanbread, how are you?
  5. I am currently a student at NYU and will be finishing my degree this coming May. I was also hesitant to attend NYU back in Jan 2011 due to the costs but I must say that I do not have any regrets. Its a good program and has a great reputation in NYC as well as all over the US. Luckily, I was able to fund my education by taking loans through Wells Fargo and I am hoping to join HRSA or the Army Corps to help me pay off my loans. As far as the program goes, it has some really good and smart instructors. Plus if you have any concerns and you feel that you are not getting what you want, then you can definitely speak up and NYU does listen and work with you to make sure you get what you want. The negatives are that we dont get enough clinical experience we want but thats still OK cause ultimately, you are learning the skills you need when you are at the hospital or when you are in simulation. Yes there are cheaper routes such as Hunter or other CUNY schools but do you really want to wait to get an admission or do you want to just get in and get your degree so you can start working and earning? Think about the opportunity costs...Also I think that everyone these days are going into health care for job security which is understandable due to current circumstances in the US but the industry is getting flooded by people who are not genuine and are not passionate about nursing itself. Which I think is super disappointing...I personally am passionate about Nursing and my specialization is the elderly population in this country. Unfortunately, most people in nursing school do not want to work with the elderly that saddens me because they are in dire need for help.. So think hard and be honest to yourself why you want to do nursing and what are the reasons for you to go into nursing. Its not easy and its definitely a lot of hard work. Dealing with 8-10 patients in 10-12 hour shifts can be super exhausting and can burn you out, due to that, question yourself, can I do this? is this for me? And if you decide on attending NYU, I say its a good decision you are making...yes its not perfect but then no school is and will you get the education you need and require, yes you will. Matter of fact, I have had such a good experience, that I have been admitted to the Masters program at NYU. Best of luck and let me know if you have any questions..
  6. I am in an accelerated BSN Program out here in NYC and before I joined the program this year, I thought long and hard about the profession. First of all, make sure you are really passionate about being a nurse and taking care of sick people. Second, its not just about the money but your dedication to the profession. I see a lot of kids in my program who just graduated from undergrad and joined the program who have absolutely no work experience and have never had any sort of responsibilities. They lack compassion and it scares me that this is going to be the future of our country...having nurses who are just in it for the wrong reasons. So think hard if this is for you or not...as far as jobs go, its tough finding one but I am not worried about it right now. You have to be flexible in moving and also be open to the idea of working in other places such as nursing homes, visiting home nurse, part time nursing, school nurse, prisons etc etc...if you need any information, do let me know and I would be happy to help! good luck with your search!
  7. congrats alisson :) good to hear that you are in :) yehhh!!!
  8. Jlan, thanks for the information but can you disclose whats good and whats bad about the NYU ABSN program? I got accepted into the spring program and I just wanted to speak to someone who is currently enrolled in the program. Any feedback would be greatly appreciate it :) BTW you have good points on other schools..
  9. Hello guys, did any of you join NYU BSN program? I was accepted into their program for Spring 2011 for the ABSN program and I am also having cold feet. Its going to cost me 120k inclusive of everything and I also have 40k loans from my previous degree. By the time I pay it off, it will be 200k...any suggestions on what I should do? Should I not go to NYU? Currently, I have been unemployed for a year now and havent had any luck with finding work. I have all my pre-reqs done and have applied to handful of schools for next year. I got into NYU and am really excited but not sure if I want to take on another 120k in loans...please help!! also I am 32 and planning on getting married by the time I am 35..not sure how my bf feels about taking on my debt...
  10. Big Nob...I called them and they told me I was accepted :) I am sooooo happy!! thank you so much for the information..you are awesome :) thank you thank you!!
  11. oh WOW Congrats Big Noob for getting in...really happy for you!! which dean did you email? and how do I get their contact information?
  12. I still have not heard from NYU God only knows if I got in or not...
  13. Thanks for the information guys...I really hope you are right and I do an admission..if I dont, then I will wait to hear from other schools. In the meantime I have started to look at other programs in healthcare or getting my masters in something. As it is, the situation in this country is not going to get any better and jobs have become scarce. Been unemployed for almost a year and things are not looking good...have to spend another 100k+ for another degree is outrageous...and NO job is guaranteed!! hope God has something good planned for all of us. God Bless this country...
  14. I am not sure how you guys are getting acceptance letters via email...I called the school this morning and they assured me that they are NOT telling anyone on the phone if they got into the program unless they have received a package from NYU and nor are they emailing people telling them that they were accepted into the program. They also told me that they are reviewing applications and will notify people until end of December regardless of the deadlines to register for clinical. The school also said not to go by what people are saying here in this forum...either way, I think its great for people who have already been accepted, best of luck to them. And the others like myself will have to wait and see our faith..
  15. I think private schools, public schools (cc and unis) are all very tough to get into..nursing is highly in demand, the economy sucks, lots of people dont have jobs and are moving towards healthcare. Including myself....I have a BS from Purdue, did a ton of my pre-reqs b/w 2004-2006, applied to ABSN for fall of 2006 in private schools and got rejected. My GPA wasnt so good from BS degree but I got all As and Bs in my science courses and even then, I was rejected. Now, I dont have a job and desperately want to go into nursing and willing to go anywhere where I can be prepared to the NCLEX. The thing you all need to take in consideration is that the longer you wait to get into a program, the more money you are losing cause you are not working or even if you are in a 3-4 yr program, you are still not making money, hence you are better off going to any school where you can get in, finish your degree and practice. The other thing I am running into is that my chem (done in 97), stats (done in 2000), A&P & Micro (done in 2004-2006) can be all considered to be old and I really dont want to repeat any of them to waste my time and money. At this point, I am willing to go anywhere and will take loans out cause i know at the end, I will always have a job and I could careless about the economy AND, i will be able to pay off the loans...Good luck!!
  16. Actually not all schools require that the pre-reqs must not be older than 5-7 years. I know NYU has a requirement that the classes must not be older than 10 years and the schools in Carribean are a bit flexible..also check out schools in other states. If you can take care of the finances, then I say best to try schools in the carribean. hope this helps..
  17. Dear God's Love - Thank you for the suggestions...I checked out IUON and it seems like a good program but you have to be in school for 4 semesters to get your BSN. You basically do 1 year in the carribean and 1 year in one of the schools in the US and then you can get your BSN and sit for the NCLEX. This program is for people who already have a 4 year degree. The AUA program seems good because for me, I would only need to do 1 year of clinical since I have 90% of my pre-reqs completed, I get my ASN, come back to the states, sit for NCLEX, practice (make money) and study part time to finish my BSN (usually hospitals reimburse you)...this way I do not have to take out a ton of loans. BTW I did call SGU and when the admissions picked up, they said that they dont know much about the nursing program and I would have to contact their office in Grenada. Do you know anything about their program? What programs are you looking at?
  18. Elpark - You are saying that you were able to obtain your BSN in 1 year? what do you mean by Diploma? And which uni is this? THanks :)
  19. I am in a similar situation...I have a GPA thats also a 2.67 and its been tough getting into programs all over the states. I have found a few schools that are not so stricted about GPAs. I am looking to go to the carribean to do my ASN, come back to the states, take the NCLEX, get my RN, work and also study for my BSN. Check out University of Oklahoma...there requirement is a 2.5. I also live in NJ but willing to go anyhwere in the country or the carribean to get my nursing degree...let me know if you have any other questions.
  20. I think it all depends on the school. I also have a business degree and looking to join either an ADN or BSN program where I can be done in 1 year. Unfortunately my GPA is too low to get into a nursing program in most of the schools. I am looking to go to a school in the carribean where they will except my GPA and I already have majority of my pre-reqs completed. I would go there just for 1 year to complete my clinical, come back to the US, take the NCLEX, get my RN, work full time and work on completing my BSN. A lot of hospitals around the country pay for you to complete your BSN. I have been told that after I finish my school in the carribean, I would have a guaranteed admission at CUNY Lehman where I can finish my BSN in 1.5 yrs. Thats because I also have a BS like yourself. It all depends on the school...I would say it would take up to 2 yrs at the most to finish your BSN. Let me know if you have anymore questions.
  21. God's Love you are so right about that!!! I have emailed some of the students that I found on Facebook but none of them have emailed me back as yet The admissions seem to be some what clueless about the program...they keep saying, oh just put in the application and we will get back to you. I had a million questions when I went to seminar yesterday and the admission person was like, oh I need to close up, so just email me. Then this morning I had a conversation with them again and the person was saying, how I just need to apply and I shouldnt put the cart before the horse and I told the person, look, I am spending 40k here and of course I am going to have a ton of questions. And I dont have a job right now, so I want to be sure this program is legit and it prepares you well for the NCLEX. Have you had a chance to speak to them as yet? I am going to go visit the IUOU (the school on St.Kitts) office on Friday and I have also left a voice mail for Remington College in Florida. How is your search going and where are you applying for school?

Thanks for the info...I am going to call them up tomorrow. Maybe even visit them since they are right here in NYC. Good luck and please do keep in touch. I am assuming you are taking the ASN route and you will finish your BSN once you are back in the states. Did you ever check out of any of these schools? http://www.discovernursing.com/nursing-programs-without-waiting-lists

Sammie - Also it says on their site that we have to take the TEAS....did you have to take that? people with a degree already, do we have to take this test? Also, how are you funding your school? private loans from the states?
  24. Purdue725 replied to j13's topic in Nursing Career
Thank you so much for the advice! I really appreciate it...I took alot of pre-reqs b/w 2004-2006, finished my BS in 2002 and tried to get into a BSN or Accelerated BSN in 2006 and had no luck. I gave up and got a new job. Unfortunately, I lost my job in Dec 2009 and now I am really thinking of going back to school to finish my nursing so I can get my RN. I dont want to do the BSN now cause it would take me 3 yrs and I would be 36 by the time I am done and I would have more debt. I thought Antigua would be good because I can start in Sept, finish my clinical part, get my ASN and study for my NCLEX. Once I have that, I would work and then finish BSN online which would take up to a year. The Antigua would cost me about 35k but my main concern is passing the NCLEX and how well they prepare you. I am going to check out the school you are starting in May...is it a good program? and have you seen a lot of people pass the NCLEX when they graduate from there? and are you working on your ASN or BSN? Thank you so much for the info..really appreciate it!! God bless our country!

Sammie - did you have to take a test to get into the program? how hard is it? I have a BS in Business, have done most of my pre-reqs and I want to get into a school asap. Have you heard anything about the Antigua school?
