  1. I found this at a website via google: http://www.plexoft.com/SBF/R04.html Rx: (Medical) Prescription. From Latin recipe, imperative form of recipere, `to receive, take.' Developed from practice of extending tail of R and crossing it.
  2. Exactly. They are three entirely separate microbes.
  3. Here's a link to a CDC page on antimicrobial resistance: http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar.html C Diff - http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/id_Cdiff.html MRSA - http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_mrsa.html VRE - http://www.cdc.gov/ncidod/dhqp/ar_vre.html Hope that helps
  4. Usually loose, mucous-y (think gelatin), unforgettable foul odor, sometimes bloody streaks. When you're sending a spec off for c-diff toxin, you have to send liquid/mucous-y stool.
  5. As I understand it, scrubbing or using soap allows more of the NTG to penetrate your skin. Just rinse it off with water. We make a note on our MARs about where the last site is, so the next nurse knows where to look for it and where not to put the next patch, so the sites can be rotated.
  6. Patient Drug Dose Route Time Rationale for medication Documentation
  7. I would've been so tempted to say: "Sure, if you'll give an enema to the patient in room 22 for me..." The visitors where I work are generally very well behaved, but when people do this sort of thing they are directed to the patient kitchen where they can find empty vases. I'm soooooooooooo glad hospital admin in Canada doesn't discipline staff for not catering to "the customer's" every little whim.
  8. I'm not sure what you should do next but I have to disagree with NoCrumping here. She's not being a "rat", she's looking out for her patient's wellbeing and trying to ensure that they receive safe nursing care. I think I'd call the BON and ask them what to do.
  9. Fentanyl is available in transdermal patches as well...
  10. Thanks for the feedback everyone. I think I'll talk to the unit manager and see if I can negotiate for more time.
  11. How much orientation would you consider to be adequate? I am a new grad who has been offered a position on a a geriatric medical ward with 4 days of hospital orientation and 1 day shift and 1 night shift of ward orientation. I did my last semester of preceptorship on this ward, but I'm concerned that this won't be enough orientation time. Is this an unreasonable amount of orientation or am I just experiencing typical new grad jitters?
  12. A vascular surgeon could do sclerotherapy or a mini phlebectomy (just taking out a small portion of the vein and tying off the ends, the scar is about 1cm long)
  13. As a student who will be starting my last semester/preceptorship in January, it is very reassuring to know that I am not alone in being nervous about how well I will fair once I graduate. I think I'll have to re-read this thread once I get into it to remind myself that I am beginning a whole new learning-process. Nursemary9 - You sound like an great preceptor to work with. :)
  14. We use Math for Meds: Dosages & Solutions 8th ed. to learn how to do various calculations. link to math for meds at amazon.com
  15. thanks RN2B2005, i didn't realize that. it does appear to have worked on the wart on my knee though.
  16. Another home remedy I've heard about is applying a layer of clear nail polish to the wart. I'm assuming it works in the same way that duct tape does, but I don't know whether nail polish cuts off the air supply. Might be worth a shot though...
  17. *warning - gross* i had a wart on my finger when i was 7 or 8. i'd already had one burned off and didn't want to do that again, so... i bit it off. that sucker bled like crazy and my mom freaked out. she said i'd get warts in my mouth. *eek* the wart never came back and i didn't get warts in my mouth, but i have a little scar on my finger can't believe i did that...
  18. Duct tape totally works I tried wart-removers from the drug store, but they didn't work. The duct tape worked in a week or two. Cheap, painless, and cooooool
  19. thanks everyone :)
  20. I'm wondering where you all buy your uniforms. I love the cut and weight of Deauville scrub sets (11344) and have been buying them at Images near VGH and the Sears at Metrotown (when they're on sale ) But a salesperson at Sears said they wouldn't be selling medical uniforms there anymore. Should I try catalogues, different stores, or... make my mom laugh until she cries and attempt to sew my own from a pattern? *hee*
