Night shift and Sleeping
Worked nights for several years. There was a study in the 90's about giving night shift workers a power nap (20-30 mins) in addition to their break time. The results included a decrease in med errors. This would be a great EBP project!

PCOS and implication for nurses
I too have PCOS. I agree with the prev. posts, but wanted to add emphasis to connecting patients with providers. So many women are not being diagnosed with pcos at all. And there are alot that are being managed by a gp. Unless the gp has an endocrine sub-specialty, pcos should be treated by an endocrinologist. And also helping our patients find resourses for managing the wonderful bonus symptoms of pcos is important. Symptoms such as facial hair can be very frustrating to most. Hope this helps, good luck with your paper. Maybe we should start a nurses with pcos forum on here! I wonder how many other soul-cysters are nurses?

IV piggyback question
Hey, concerning the orig. question.... Hang the piggyback higher. The pump is working but it only knows to pump at a certain rate the bag that will infuse is the one with a fluid level higher than the other. As the PB bag empties, you will see it switch over to the primary bag at the rate set.

Float Nurse info
What is the most important info you would want a float nurse to know working in your area? This would be a RN with at least 5 years experience in other critical care areas. Thanks for your input!:redpinkhe

Fibromyalgia Diagnosis too quick?
Hi All, Just looking for some other ideas. My sister in law had gastric bypass surgery 5 years ago. Since July she has gained 30 pounds, and admits to having more stress and stressful eating during that time. Also during this time she started having non descript joint pain, mental sluggishness and fatigue. PMH of depression, lymes disease. So! she went to her pcp who has known her at least 10 years with these symptoms and was told she has fibromyalgia and given a script for flexeril. Lab work was done and she was told to see a rheumatologist. I told her not to take the flexeril yet and to get a second opinion, especially once she has the lab values back. Is this the norm? It seems like she has symptoms of a lot of things. Has anyone else come across a fibromyalgia diagnosis this quick? Thanks for all ideas and opinions!

Rn Adn
Most Hospitals (around here anyway) are offering refresher courses to try to market themselves to the returning workforce. Ask potential employers what they offer. Sometimes orientation is long enough to cover as a refresher. Good Luck, and welcome back!

ICP Transducers
I agree, my 8 bed unit puts them in under sterile, and doesn't change unless they go back to the OR.

How do you deal with the stress of the job (too busy to take a break, etc.)?
What good advice! I agree with the protein snacks while charting. But the main focus is giving yourself time to develop an organizational plan to your day. I have been a nurse for almost 8 years. I have progressed as far as I have by watching others, and how they handle certain situations. I adapt their best qualities and make them my own. My advice to you is pick someone with a few years under their belt that seems to do their job smoothly. Take them out for coffee- or spring for dinner - and chat. Tell that person what you want to accomplish and (gulp) ask for their help. I hope you won't give up. And as for feeling burnt out... think yourself through it. Meditate or pray before you go to work. Put yourself into a positive mindset. Remember when you go to work complaining, you are affecting the attitudes of your coworkers as well. Good luck!

Remodelling/construction while unit is open
Remember to keep your immunosuppressed pts as far from the construction as possible. Aspergilosis is common in construction debris. Good Luck!

please help me
I spent a year in J. Sarg's program in the early 90's as well. I had problems with my advisor keeping appointments. I finished my RN at John Tyler. I agree with Nekhismom, make sure Bon Secours will transfer into your BSN program.

Do Day Nurses Really Feel that Night Nurses Do Nothing All Night?
Just a couple of quick thoughts from one nite shifter to another..... I like the idea of shift rotation, but if you don't get 100% agreement, how can it fly? I know several day people who could come up with valid reasons not to be able to do it. Any suggestions? I'll email my cc right away! I've worked nights for 6 years, and I feel its always going to be that night shift is the catch-all shift. Now me being a control freak and all - this worked for me, because I was able to fix the broken parts and address the problems with the person involved one to one. However! the most annoying part to this is when the same people keep making the same mistakes, then its either be the babysitter or report them. I don't like conflict, but will act accordingly when someone isn't completing tasks correctly or in a timely manner on the other 2 shifts. But I am only one person, there are others whom I feel are just fixing the problem and moving on. Is there anyone else who experiences this? I stay very busy on night shift even without the docs and paperwork. But this picking up after the same people time and again can get on a persons last nerve! ..... sorry, didn't mean to turn this into a rant! (but thanks!) bj
