When I discharge people and walk them to the door to exit the hospital I like to tell them "Don't come back - we don't want repeat customers" That usually always gets a smile and a chuckle.

Wouldn't dare dream of it!!!! I would like to just stay at home if poss. I will continue to check threads regarding different agencies, any more info anyone can suggest would be helpful. Thank you.

I just started a new job a couple of months ago - and I really do like it, but I have also been interested in doing some travel nursing. I am married and have a family - I would like to stay in surrounding hospitals (There are approx 4 in 60 mile range and 3 more big hospitals in 90 mile range from my home). Moving is not an option. Do you have to choose a travel company that includes the hospitals of your choice? Do you get to choose the hospitals? I live in the Midwest - is there a company someone recommends? I am totally in the dark here so any information would be extremely helpful. I SO appreciate this forum for all the info and help it gives - will be looking forward to advice... :wink2:

how in the heck can staff even remember who's who and who's what when the administration has purposefully created labelling smoke screens. invented, imho, to keep the patient from realizing that the housekeeper from yesterday has now become the phlebologist. couldn't have said it better!!! what happened to rn, lpn/lvn, nurse's aide, and unit secretary?? at the job i have been at for the last couple of months they have the most ridiculous terminology for the employees!! give me a break - no wonder know one knows who we are!! :uhoh21:

In the hospital I work we are generally staffed about 4 pt's to each nurse. We perform total care on these pt's as we don't utilize as many aides. I think she is mad that she doesn't have an aide to delegate these responsibilities to. Come to think of it, I think most of her pt's "refuse" baths too. I just think that she feels these responsibilities are beneath her. I don't always have time to give every pt I'm taking care of a bath in a day (depends on procedures, admissions, dimissals, you get the picture), but what a prime opportunity to do a good, total head-to-toe assessment. Anyway, next time I won't be so taken aback - something will be said. There is just no excuse!!

Okay, just have to vent a little here. I was working the other day at a fairly new job (which I like a lot), and I was working with another nurse that I haven't shared very many shifts with. She is probably in her lower to mid 40's and has been an RN for about 1 year. She has always been nice in all the times that I have talked to her which really have been limited as we generally work opposite days of eachother. Anyways, one of my pt's had been incont of urine and BM and needed to be cleaned up, so since she was sitting at the nurse's station, I asked her if she would come help me. When I told her what I needed help with, she informed me that she didn't go to school to be a poop or pee nurse!!!!! HEELLLOOOO???? I am an RN too and if someone is laying in a pile of poo, I'll be changing them!! I couldn't believe she said that!! Evidently, this isn't the only time. One of the LPN's on my shift said she told her the same thing. I am so disgusted because this isn't the impression that I originally had of her. What the he** is wrong with some people!!!!?? I'm not chalking this one up as "she was just having a bad day" - I think this is actually her opinion. Please tell me this is not the attitude they're teaching in nursing school - I know it was not what I was taught. :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire :angryfire

Hey!! I'm from the NE corner of the state - don't think I'd want to live anywhere else in the world - great small community, wonderful school, and near family. So glad to be from MO - so glad this thread is going!! :wink2:

I don't know if you have a ShopKo in your region or not, but that's wear I get mine. They are sooo comfy and are most usually on sale for around $6 to $8 - they have been pretty durable for me as some of them I've had for a couple of years. They also wash well (I use bleach) except of course with the colored ones. Good luck shopping. :wink2:

I was working as a secretary in a grain elevator when the news came over the radio. I'm from a very small community and the elevator was one of the gathering places - kind of like the beauty parlor for farmers. We had a room full that day - all in disbelief. The elevator closed down 2 months later and I received a grant to go to nursing school. Can't believe it's been 5 years. Still feels so personal.

Amen to that!! I was an LPN before getting my RN degree, and it was by far and away the best route for me. Like so many have said, it landed some extra cash in my pocket while attending school for my RN. It also gave me the experience and confidence I needed, plus the reassurance that I was in the profession meant for me. Heartstart, you just do what you need to do to get to your goal. I am a VERY proud ADN graduate and a very good nurse. Someone posted on their signature that "a degree is not the same thing as an education" - the same could be said about being professional as well - whether it be ADN, BSN, PhD, or CRNA - we all have the responsibility of acting like decent human beings. :)

I recently started a new job - which I LOOOVE, and am so much happier at, but the other day, I had a pt who was upset that the lab was coming to "stick her" when a nurse on another floor drew her blood through her saline lock, and told her she wouldn't have to be stuck anymore because we could just draw blood that way. The woman came in with bilateral PE's and needed a PT/INR drawn, plus and CBC and CMP. I've never heard of drawing blood through a saline lock before and couldn't get blood return anyway through any of them (she had 2) even though they flushed fine. Am I off track here - I don't think it's a good idea to do this.

Thank you all for the advice - doesn't sound too bad. They gave me the option of going to the lab for a morning and watching a phlebotimist if I wanted to - I might take them up on that offer as well. Thanks again for your suggestions. :)

I am starting at a new facility (Thank goodness!!) and will be doing some of my own blood draws. This is something I've never done before and would like to know the differences between starting IV's and doing blood draws. I don't have any probs starting IV's, but am feeling a little nervous about this. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!!

:w00t: I GOT THE JOB!!! :w00t: I can't believe it!!! I just talked to my new boss and she said that personnel would be getting back to me today!!!! HOORAH!!!! I'm putting my 2 weeks notice on June 15th!! Thanks to all for the support and well wishes. This feels like a new beginning and the change I was needing. Good luck to those who are waiting for the job offer or who are looking for a change. You can do it! I have been sooo burned out in the job I'm in right now with the pt load that has been placed on all of us. My new boss said, "I have to warn you, we are 5:1 right now - and I don't want to scare you off." ARE YOU KIDDING ME??? - 5:1 would be a TOTAL vacation from what I've been doing. I work 10-12:1 right now. YIPPEE! Now, I'm not crazy, there is a certain amount of crappola that comes with every job, and I'm sure this one will be no exception, but it never hurts to take a chance!! Just got home from my interview - it went very well. I hit it off with the director right away. It turns out we are from around the same place and know the same people. Not that that gets my foot in the door any sooner, but we had a pleasant conversation and I felt very at ease. I have to say that this job will be considerably different from what I'm doing now. It rarely involves surgery pt's or dialysis pt's, and does involve some pediatrics (yikes!)-but it's good to get out of your comfort zone, right? She told me she had one other person to interview today and it would be between me and her - she also said that she wished she didn't have to interview her because she really liked me, but who knows?? I don't want to speculate before hand. I hope I know something soon. The agony of it all is that I have to work the next 3 days in a row (12 hour shifts) so I probably won't hear anything until Monday! AHHHH! Oh, well - I'm very excited. Thanks again to all for the support. :wink2:

My thoughts exactly. ESPECIALLY if the pt is threatening, write down everything they say no matter how many curse words - you can't be afraid of offending anyone in a situation like that. You can bet your bottom dollar that the court system is not G-rated.

I can't say that I've ever been asked "why" when calling in (though it's something I rarely do), BUT I have been asked "why?" when I was called to come in extra because of short staffing/call-ins and couldn't/wouldn't! To me, that IS totally MY business, and I told them just that!!! :angryfire
