this is a nice thread!!! I am a new grad who wasn't placed on residency training, was given 8 wks of orientation, and is abt to be off-orientation in 2 wks time. I am having butterflies in my stomach just thinking of the time i will be on my own. My preceptor told the director i am ready, but i dont think i am. I hope more will post their experiences...I can already identify with most that were posted. Ive hung IVPB Abx, only to come back in an hour that it didn't go- bec i didn't unclamp.. >gave 2nd dose of kayexelate, while forgetting to check on the recent K level ( in retrospect, it was already 4, and I was able to give the med. OMG...how low can it go ) The next shift RN gave me and my preceptor a beating. There you go..She tried to leave me on my own, thinking I am ready... gave 1 cap instead of 2, i forgot the medication, but my preceptor caught up with it. hmmmmm...we can only have enough mistakes in our lifetime, we can never have all the mistakes, so i guess we learn from each other.. God bless us all..

wow, this is a great thread...hopefully, other knowledgeable med-surg RNs can post more, to help the new ones like me. any more inputs?

thanks a lot you great people, for all the advice here..I actually feel better now. I am actually on my 4th week of orientation at Med-Surg as a new graduate nurse, and I have a very nice seasoned male preceptor, who is actually the GO-TO person of almost the entire staff. To him, nothing is a dumb question, so I have no qualms in asking. My problem actually is the workload, like I am too overwhelmed by so much to do in so little time...but when I take a look at the other RNs who have been in the unit for a long time, they seem to be just COOL. So I figured, i will learn the routine, too, in God's time. Nothing beats an optimistic RN, although to be honest, I dread the day when I will be on my own. This forum though, keeps my hopes alive! Thanks a lot to the seasoned RNs here, and may God bless you!

to suzanne and lawrence, just to ask...i've been here in the US since Mar26, so that is more than 90days...already signed a job offer last week, and is about to file for the I-140...what are my chances considering the very narrow window of about a month? I've been hearing from other sources they need to file for labor cert and all that stuff that I do not understand..I havent directly spoken to the lawyer, though, but he has emailed me about the requirements for submission. My fiancee and I are about to get married in about 3weeks time, and I honestly dont know whether I still need to go with AOS, or wait for him to petition me. He is a US citizen. The difference is that I think if I go ahead with the AOS, I will get Permanent GC, while if he will petition me, I will get temporary GC for 2years. Also, if I go ahead with the AOS, I will miss out on my sign-in bonus, which will be used up to pay for the hospital's lawyer. We can use it up instead for the spousal petition... Please enlighten me....I've so far followed every ounce of Suzanne's advice and I havent failed since, so I honestly want to hear your opinion on this matter... thanks in advance..my mind is mixed up right now..

Very well said, lawrence. Hope to get to know more people like you. Our nursing staff were very helpful when I told them I was planning to take up Nursing. In fact they were the ones who taught me how to go about making NCP. The chief nurse was happiest of all, giving me encouragement all the way. Guess the very secure ones are those who really appreciate that their profession is now the most in demand. God bless!

To lawrence: What's the CGFNS/ICHP#? So sorry, am really not familiar with this. How do I get the #? To suzanne: Guess I would have to wait for my eligibility from CA, then. I will just pray it wont take them forever. Am really sad, I wish I found this site earlier. Sigh.... Thanks a lot, angels! Hoping for more of your guidance.

I just cant understand the mentality of some who resort to name-calling and judging other people's decision on what path to pursue in their lives. There is even one thread here wherein someone mentioned that doctors are shifting to nursing after finding out they will not get a lot of money in their profession. After being noble and serving this country for the longest time, and now finally deciding to secure the future of their loved ones, these doctors get the bashing. Majority are not like these people, however. And we oh soooo love them. These are the very secure ones, the more highly respected in this field, those that provide us with the inputs. Thank you, happy people! Agree wih nurse_md and nina9404. Therapeutic Communication- we should take this to heart. One of the best we've learned. And this is rarely emphasized in medical school.

I also would like to post my questions...and hope you could help me too. 1) I have submitted my application to CA-BON around 2-3 wks ago, and they have sent me the confirmation card. Since NY gives the eligibility faster, is it okay if I would rather submit in NY, since CA does not issue the hard license without SSN? 2) I'm done with ielts, and I did not take the local board and cgfns. Can I start with processing the VSC? Thank you very much! Please dont get tired of us.
