  1. I am trying to gather some information to present to our non nursing leadership who determines our faculty work load. Right now we are 1 credit = 35 hours and 1:1 for theory, lab, and clinical. Where I am seeing discrepancies is I will have an instructor teaching 4 credits of clinical (140 hours of in person clinical time with students). Other instructor teaches a 4 credit theory course and total in person hours teaching is 60 for the semester. But their work load is still 1:1.
  2. It was a very rewarding job that as an educator I really enjoyed. The longer you are there and the better that you do you will get more students. But if at any time that you feel it is too much, just let your leader know and they will keep it where it is comfortable for you.

  4. I work for a 3 year BSN program. We give a dosage calculation exam every quarter. As of right now, the students get 20 questions and they are limited to 2 minutes per question. I know can change this policy as far as the time limit goes. What are your thoughts? I feel it's important that we make sure we are providing safe nurses who will take the time to figure out the math but at the same time, I feel there should be a time limit. Your input is greatly appreciated.
  5. Good afternoon! I have been asked to start up an RN to BSN program within our University. We have a very successful BSN program now and we are wanting to reach more and move them to a higher level. I would like to hear from you! What would make a great RN to BSN program stand out from all of the others? Thank you for taking your time with this!
  6. A little background...this is a very small (5 students) OB class. They were told to research the pros and cons of different birth control options as well as patient education. They asked their instructor if they could put it into table format and she agreed. Four out of the five included a reference sheet with a reference on it. Nowhere on their papers was there any in text citations. 80% of their papers were direct word for word out of their textbooks. They all felt that referencing at the end was adequate. We met with each of these students and I honestly feel that they did not purposely plagiarize. All four admit that it was plagiarism and they have learned a very valuable lesson. This is where is gets a little trickier...One of the four has had some previous issues. He took a picture of an exam and was smart enough to post it on Facebook. He automatically failed that course and had to repeat it. Another time he plagiarized a paper. We sat down with him and had a very long discussion about this and his actions. As per faculty protocol, he was exited from the nursing program for having two academic dishonesty issues. However, the academic team (not part of the nursing department) decided that they really like him and they overturned the nursing department and allowed him one more chance into the nursing program. When he started back up some of the members of the academic team and the nursing team spent a couple of hours going over stipulations to allowing him back in. One was that there could be NO academic issues. Well, now that this has happened, he is scheduled to be exited from the program. Once again, the academic team does not feel that it was plagiarism. They feel that since he referenced in the back of his paper that it was an attempt and should not count as plagiarism. To me, plagiarism is simple and clean cut. Either you write in your own words or you give credit. I am meeting with the academic team tomorrow and I have the backing of the entire nursing department. I just wanted to get somebody else's opinions.
  7. There is a great app that I use with my students to help understand EFM. It is called Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring and it is free through the apple app store. Great tool!
  8. Why an ADN program, as compared to a BSN program? You can do an accelerated program in a year longer and this degree will really help with excellent job prospects.

  10. When teaching endocrine disorders in pediatrics, I start the class with letting them all know that they have just been given the diagnosis of Type 1 Diabetes. I then have each student check their blood glucose and hand them an envelope with different blood sugar reading to draw from during the class. We then go into the mechanisms of T1D and randomly throughout the day I will have an alarm go off and they "check" their glucose and make note on the amount of insulin and any interventions. This continues throughout the entire class as we discuss other issues with the endocrine system as well.
  11. One of the biggest things that I remember from my MSN program was to never teach to a test. When I give a test, I will do an item analysis to see how many students miss each question and if 80% miss the same question I will take another look at this question and decide from there if I will throw it out. I just gave an exam in pediatrics on Monday and one question that asked where you would see substernal retractions with a picture. Most (90%) picked the wrong answer. This is very important to know and it was very obvious as to where the substernal retractions should be seen so I did not throw that one out. It really is up to your judgement. Another tip that has worked great and I am seeing a better response to test grades, is that I allow the students to use handwritten notes for their exams. These have to be written in their own handwriting. By doing this they are retaining more information than they do by just reading. It has been a great study tool, and they really do not even go back to look at their notes when they take the tests. Hope this helps.

  13. I need to come up with a nursing diagnosis for my health promotion class that relates to something that I am going to work on improving within myself. I have chosen to try to not eat as much chocolate and to eat a healthier lifestyle. The one I came up with is: Imbalanced nutrition r/t excessive intake AEB dysfunctional eating patterns. Does this sound good or can you think of any other ideas to make it better.
  14. good morning! i am one of 6 that are helping to organize ournursing school annual nursing forum. the purpose of this is to get all of thenursing students together and to find a topic that is of importance to each ofthem. this year's theme is going to be focused on self-care of the nurse and self-advocacy. i am looking for some clever ideas of names for the forumthat will be fun! this year we are also going to have breakout sessions, so iam looking for ideas for that as well. so far the breakout sessions that wehave are: *"i've graduated nursing school, now what?" (forour students who will be graduating a couple days after the forum.) *creative journaling- writing without apa or references *??????? thank you all for your creative ideas that i know you willhelp to come up with!!!!
  15. Good evening! I am wanting to see what textbooks that you use for pediatric nursing class. I teach in a BSN program and we have a good book, but I would like to look at what others are using and maybe there is something out there that is better. Right now our book is both OB and peds. I would love to be able to get a book that is available to the students either as a hard copy or as an ebook. We have many students that drive 1+ hours each way to come to class and they would love to have something to listen to on their way to class or home. Thank you for your suggestions!
  16. Good evening! I generally post on here as a nurse but today I am posting as a mom!:) My daughter is a type 1 diabetic who was diagnosed 1.5 years ago. She is 13 years old now. Three weeks ago her pump catheter kinked (again) and she woke up with a blood sugar of 515 with large ketones. Finally after a few hours we was able to get this down. She ended up in the hospital, despite drinking tons of water, with severe dehydration. She was experiencing bad stomach pains and after a few days and a couple more ED visits found out she was constipated from everything. Well then this past Sunday morning my husband went in to check on her and check her glucose level. Her eyes were fixed and dilated as well as she was twitching. Her glucose was 55. I went to get a juice box but she was unable to swallow. I then grabbed her glucogon and administered it. Immediately after I did this she went into a HUGE seizure activity. Her lips where blue as she was gasping for air. She also bit her tongue pretty bad during the process. (I would of given anything to have suction and O2 at this point!) She was taken by ambulance to the hospital and monitored for the day. For about 4 hours past this seizure she did not remember anything from the previous night or that morning. That did seem to come back. Since this time she is still complaining of stomach pain and headaches. We have adjusted numbers on her insulin pump as well. She seems to remember things but just seems to be much slower at comprehending what is going on. I feel that she is just not back to her normal self yet. What are your suggestions? Is this behavior normal after a hypoglycemic seizure? Why would her head and stomach still hurt? Thanks for your help!
  17. Good evening! I have been teaching pediatric nursing to BSN students for a couple of years now. At our school we do ATI exams with the majority of the core courses, ped's being one of them. My students took their exam today and mainly earning 1's and 2's but no 3's! This seems to be the pattern and I am not happy about this. I have been basing my lecture on the text book and supplementing with ATI book but I think it's time for a change! I am wanting to base my lecture on ATI and supplement with the text! What are your thoughts on this? Is this already what you do? Any extra advise is appreciated! I just really want to see higher test scores on their ATI exam's!
  18. Globe University/ MSB is a great nursing program. Double check NCLEX pass rates. I know for a fact as a nurse at a hosptial that takes students from both school that I would much rather have a MSB student take care of me. They are very well rounded and have a great deal of information that they bring to the table.
  19. :hug: Here are some hugs your way! I can see how this could be very traumatizing to anyone! I am surprised that you have all of this equipment knowing what type of patients you get on your floor! Patient saftey? I am sure that you did all that you could for this person and sometimes if we could just turn back time it could be a whole new story. Since we cannot do this...you have to move on and continue to push yourself and take time for yourself!!!

  23. When my son was 3 he had to have a circ done. A couple of months later we seen the surgeon at a store and my son yelled "Mommy look it's the pee pee doctor!" While taking care of a baby in the NICU, the little girls big brother came in to see her for the first time. He looked at her and then looked at a little boy in a swing across the room and said; "Daddy can we take that one instead!"
  24. Hello everyone! I have just recently graduated with my MSN with an emphasis in nursing education. (Last week:D) I have worked as a staff nurse for my entire nursing career either in L&D, or NICU. I am new to the Minnesota area and the schools that they have to offer.
