Calling parents
We have passes that the students use...I keep one copy and give the other back to them. Often with the problematic parents, and if in my judgement a call isn't needed, I tell the kids to put the pass in their planner for their parent. But I have 8,9 and 10 yr olds....High School?

Rules for the School Nurse's Office
Cancelled 911 against the advice of a medical profession? That's playing with fire.

Malpractice Insurance
So you would refuse something you felt uncomfortable with, even if administration told you to do it? My position is I do not feel this particular task requires an RN, anybody can do it and I feel that the RN is at particular risk because we have to carry our own insurance. Is this why the district wants the RN to do it? Sorry but I know when push comes to shove, who gets thrown under the bus. I know I'm being vague. Sorry.

Malpractice Insurance
Just asking for a rough estimate. Do you all have malpractice insurance through your district or did you have to get your own policy? I know many of us have insurance IN ADDITION to their district coverage but was getting your own required for district employment?

office thermometer
I am on my second probe for my brand new Welch Alyn that does not read fevers. The company keeps telling me that Im not positioning it correctly. Funny, when I worked in the hospital and used their Welch Alyns everyday I had no problems at all! I do believe that with the younger kids it is more difficult for them to keep it under the tongue and mouth closed properly. So I switched to the Preve non contact which I love. It has come in very handy during this flu season, pretty much taking everyone's temp at this point including the staff!!

secretary and absences
My secretary marks an A for Absence, U for unexcused, L for Late, ED for Early Dismissal. We have a book that she and I are privy too that gives the reason for Absence (strep, pink eye etc) Nobody else sees it. If there is a highly contagious ailment I notify the teacher or teachers involved and a notice is sent home to class (all anonymous). Custodians are also alerted. I also keep an illness log in my office. Elementary school, I don't have older kids that change periods.

The "Best" Nurse Pass Notes
I got.....He seems to be passing gas. After assessing the situation I wrote back... If you had Spanish Spicy meat and black beans for breakfast you would need to fart too. Let him bomb away. Cleared for return to class.

I told you so!
I suggest all teachers to have a puke pail in their classes, one that students can walk through the hall with if necessary. If they feel nauseas give them the pail to walk to the nurses office with. If a child gets sent back up to class, put the puke pail next to their desk as insurance. Nine times out of ten it isn't used. And when it is...the custodial staff has an easy cleanup.
