Professional Journals

Hi all,...I am consistently frustrated when I do a journal search for a class, find what appears to be the exact article I need,...only to find that the only way to get access is to either purchase the article or buy a subscription to the journal. I am considering purchasing a subscription to an NP Journal or two. Any suggestions? Any particular journal you find yourself referencing more than others? Any journal you subscribe to or just find an interesting read? Thanks in advance for the recommendations!

    I would also suggest talking with your school's librarian. He/she may know a way for you to get free access to some of the more common journals.

    Finally, I would definitely talk to the director of you NP program. Providing students with appropriate library resources is an expectation of a good educational program -- and I believe a criteria included in some accreditation programs. If the school library doesn't have the journals the students need to use, your program director may be able to get the library to start subscribing to some of those journals. That wouldn't help you in the short term, but it might help future students.

    For anyone who is interested,....I just joined AANP,....it included access to two NP journals,..including the one mentioned above!! Student membership is only $55.

    My school offers free access to many journals if I do my search through the library website. I agree with some of the above posters to do a little research with your library and see what is already offered.

    In addition, I have several journal apps on my iPad which allow you to see past and current issues, but not necessarily search, if you are interested in those options.

    As others have noted, your school school may provide access to most of these peer reviewed journals. If you access it online, check with the librarian how best to enter the information. For me, I just need the doi number. There are still a few journals that may be restricted, but most are readily accessible and free through the online library. Good luck!

    Do I work? Oh to have the luxury to not work while in grad school!! Kudos to all of you who have managed to do this!! Yes, I do work full time. My school and employer do offer the services you are all describing,...it just seems that I often find THE article I want and it isn't available through school or work! I usually just keep searching,..this is time consuming and frustrating. I am excited to have access to at least two more peer reviewed journals. Perhaps this will ease my frustration.

    google scholar is a good search engine that you can sometimes find access to articles via. As others have mentioned the school library should have access to a sufficient number of articles, on every search engine I've had the pleasure of using there is a checkbox somewhere to only search articles that you have access to. Our school also has a way for you to submit a request to get a copy of the article on loan from another school, your school may offer a similar feature, it might be good to talk to the school librarian about your options.
