Positive TB Test

My PPD is positive! I just had my chest x-ray. My question is, can I refuse the meds if my x-ray is negative? Can my empoyer refuse to let me work if I refuse the meds? I am trying to conceive and have already lost 2 babies so there is no way I am taking those nasty meds and NO way i am waiting 9 months to start trying. I am kind of freaking out!

here's a link with specific considerations.

it provides regimens for latent tb (after active tb has been r/o): ea regimen different, depending on size of induration.

you should really discuss this with your doctor.

best of luck.

Are they suggesting that you need the meds? Typically only high risk persons are prescribed the meds unless you have a greater than 15mm induration....I work with a few nurses with positive PPDs and they just have repeat CXRs done every so often- I don't know of any that have had to take the meds.

Thank you nene RN, that is exactly what I was needing to know. It sounds to me like it is optional to take the meds as long as there are no signs of active infection. I looked closer at the form they gave me and the doc just has to sign saying I have no signs of active infection, then another place they can check that pt. refused meds. I feel much better!

Good luck.

Personally, I wouldn't take the meds if I were asymptomatic with a negative chest xray.

My sister tested positive(ppd)(- chest) in grade school (in 80's) she had to take the meds but for preventive measure only. I started testing positive in for ppd after working at a hospital and was told at that time(6yrs ago) that they no longer give the meds unless you are at high risk, like what was previously stated.I don't think an employer can make you stop working unless you have have active TB.

A CXR just shows whether you have presence of TB in your lungs. You might have it elsewhere. Our school now relys more on physical exams.
