picc lines

Published

I have a question to see what other places are doing. My lvn's have criteria to meet to give ivp's and the problem is giving pushes to a pt that has fluid infusing to a picc line. Anyone have experience with that...

What is the problem? I'm not sure I understand your question...?

At my facility lvn's cannot do anything with a picc line. Hook up an iv or flush it. So when the lvns are tested and can give certain iv meds the question came up if they can give the pushes if cont iv fluids are infusing to a picc line

at my facility they cannot do anything IV, not even specially trained. cuz i know some places will allow things that are not in their "scope of practice" unless they are specially trained, but they cannot do anything of such. i know of other places where they can do IV stuff, but not touch PIC's or PICC's at all!

So even if the ivf were hooked up to a picc they wouldn't be able to push meds thru the tubing port?

If the IVF are hooked up to a PICC and they push a med, it's still going through the PICC. If they can't have anything to do with a PICC line, they I don't see how they can push a med through it.

Where I work, LPNs can only work with existing infusions on PICC lines and other central lines. Existing infusions means replacing a maintenance bag or a piggy back. LPNs cannot give a push medication through any iv, that is a RN only function. If it is a peripheral IV, then LPNs can initiate or terminate an IV infusion after having the RN check the order.

seems to me if they can't do anything with a picc, it doesn;t really matter if cont ivf is infusing, they still can't push a med thru the picc

In Kentucky, LPN's couldnt push ANYTHING thru ANY IV until recently. They couldnt even change a dressing on a PICC, until now. The KBN passed it that they can push certain meds only, and only after taking an IV infusion class and being certified in it. They cant give sedating meds such as morphine, benadryl, ativan, etc. They can sit with blood, but they cant start it. They cant even chart a new nursing diagnosis on the focus charting without an RN's signature, which I find rediculous. I know of some LPNs who have worked alot longer than I have (Im an RN) and know alot more than I do due to experience, but yet Im allowed to do alittle more than them (not much) and I make much more money than they do.

I'm confused but you'd push it like you'd push any other meds thru a regular peripheral IV???

Yes you would push it like a normal continuous infusion thru a port in the line not a port on the picc.
