Pediatric or Psychiatry NP?

Hello everyone,

I am trying to decide between pediatric and psychiatry as an NP specialty. I am fairly interested in both of them but because I will be taking out loans to pay for my education, I would like to be employed after I work. I found more Psych NP jobs than Pediatrics.

Can someone please tell me which specialty has more jobs? Also, information on differences in starting salary and salary range would also be very helpful!

Thanks!

Honestly, I'm not sure. My sister and I always joke and say we would never do pediatrics and would rather work on the psych floor than take care of kids. Depends on what you want to do, but I don't know the answers to your questions regarding salary and jobs and stuff.

Good luck though!:nurse::)

O

The psych route seems to be a sound business strategy. There exists a shortage of psychiatrists and other prescribers eager to make a career out of writing psychotropics. It'd benefit your pocketbook to skip counseling and focus on med mgmt. You could hire a LPC to do all that at little cost. People that can do talk therapy abound.

Specializes in Med./Surg. and paramed. exams.

If you haven't already, get some serious experience in both and see which one works best for you.

Talk with the folks at URI in Rhode Island. They had an Adolescent psych CNS program.

Not sure if they have an Adolescent psych NP track. You would never be

out of work, its a high demand field.

Good luck!

Who cares which specialty has more jobs? You can only do one job at a time.

Whatever choice you make, you'll probably be doing it for the next 20-30 years. Pick the one that you love, and that you going to love for the long-term.
