Outift for an interview??

Published

i have my first interview for a CNA job at a LTC facility and not sure what to wear thatll be both appropriate yet not overdressed, im 20 and a male. for my current job i wore kakis and a polo to the interview ( i was 17) i feel like dress pants and a dress shirt is too much? Maybe if iwas interviewing at a hospital id go that route

Any opinions???

I think it would be better to risk overdressing than to under-dress for an interview. I am a female RN, and was told once by a nursing recruiter that I should have dressed more professionally for our interview. I had worn dress shoes, khaki slacks, and a dress blouse (untucked). She recommended that if I were called back for another interview that I tuck in my shirt and wear a blazer. I also think that because you are young it is more important to dress professionally. Also, consider the possibillity that someone else could interview for the position and have identical qualifications (very possible)... in this case the interviewer/recruiter is left weighing the overall impression the two candidates left him/her with.

With all that said, my recommendation is that you where dress shoes, slacks, and a long sleeve button-down dress shirt at a minimum. If you feel overdressed in a suit style coat/blazer (not sure what they call it when men's clothes) then you simply carry one as though you had been wearing it. Be sure your face is freshly shaved and that you appear to have good hygiene overall (this is a field where cleanliness is very important, so give the impression you are super clean!)

Good luck :)

Dress shoes, dress pants, long sleave shirt and tie. Always classy.

A suit. I am a 33 year old new grad male nurse who just got hired. I wore a suit. You can get one from Macy's or Kohls, or even Marshalls for cheap. Maybe $100-200. And yes, that's cheap for a suit. If you have khaki's and a button down shirt I suppose that's fine, but make sure you wear a tie. If you have time, I would go out and get that suit though. It's a small price to pay to leave a lasting impression.

you absolutely must get a full on suit like Bigst79 said. If you really want the job, you must treat it like this job is going to cost you your future happiness!!!!!

DO NOT wear polo or business casual.

When I was still in nursing school and trying to land a job in the hospital from the nursing home I was working in, I went to Kohls and searched through thier 90% off racks and found a professional buisness jacket and skirt suit set and paired with black pantyhose and black low heeled shoes for about $60 all together. When I went to my HR interview, the HR person actually set up with my future boss to met me right their and then and I got the job. Without saying a word, I know that the HR person knew what I was making and what I would be making and that dressing for the interview was chipping into my already stretched budget! Besides that, I think that she was happy that I didn't show up in a cropped tank and lowrise jeans with flip-flops on like some people do. People actually do because my boss made that comment during the interview I got hired in. Budget shop and dress for the job. If you're planning on furthering your education, you may just get the same HR person down the road! Good luck :sarcastic:

A suit. Always be dressed the best you can be. If you already have the dress pants and shirt, go and get a blazer and tie to complete the look. Do not forget dress shoes and socks. Do not wear sneakers, boat shoes or white athletic socks. (please!! LOL) You should have this in your closet anyways, so it would be something that you would get use from.

People are taken more seriously if in fact they are dressed to show respect.

I drill that into my kids' heads. And they rolled their eyes. But did it anyways. One child got a job 3 months after graduation, one still in college that got the internship of one's dreams, and a third who now knows appropriate dressing presents who you are to a potential employer.

And I have never heard an HR person state "Wow, aren't you overdressed!!" LOL

AND, I would LOVE it if my son were to say "Mom lets go suit shopping, I need an interview suit" . She will bring your Auntie, and it will be a day of it!!! HAHA----->but seriously, what mother doesn't want to hear that!?!?!?!

Good luck and let us know how it goes!!

I'm a new grad who just had an interview today for a hospital position. I was debating about whether to wear a $600 suit from Macy's or a pair of khakis and polo shirt. Then I read the advice on this post. I wore the suit. And it's a good thing I did. The two managers who interviewed me were dressed just as nice if not better and it set the tone for my professionalism through out the rest of the interview. Before I left one of the managers told me I did a great job and should be hearing from them soon. If I hadn't read this post I would have walked into the interview in the khakis and polo shirt. Who knows what would have happened. I'm glad I didn't find out. Good luck know matter what you choose.

This is awesome!! Good for you! Let us know how it goes!!

You're venturing into a professional career, your appearance and demeanor should represent that.

After reading this thread that Justin Timberlake song popped into my head

Even after wearing a $600 dollar suite and being told that "I did really well" by nurse manager I still didn't get the job. I lost out to someone with more experience. Oh well. I have two more interviews in the next two weeks. God is good and I'll get the job that right for me. Just gotta keep the faith.
