OR-specific scrubs

Published

A topic came up that I thought was interesting...how many hospitals have OR nurses wear OR-specific scrubs (hospital issued, usually)?

Probably most of them. It's an AORN standard that surgical attire is laundered by a facility that can control things such as water temperature and drying temperature.

Ours does...Only OR personnel wear them. A specific color that no one else can wear. Non OR staff are not even allowed to have personal scrubs that are the OR color.

For us it's only staff and physicians who work in the OR and other procedure areas (VIR, L&D, etc). One of our ICUs uses hospital issued scrubs due to infection control concerns. Outside of that - nobody is supposed to wear them. We have a chronic problem of people wearing scrubs outside of the hospital...but that's another topic entirely.

A little know fact which most people do not know is that they can make their employer laundry their work clothes if they are contaminated. This means anyone who does patient care can have their employer clean their work clothes when needed. Most hospitals will not let their employees know this because of cost.

I'd bid one "good luck" in ever seeing their clothing again after having been dropped off in our hospital laundry...

Mine does and every hospital that I performed OR clinicals or interviews. They must wear hospital provided scrubs. We have had MD's come from other hospital scrubs and operate, that is not within AORN standards.
