If you are an RN who will be doing SOC, RC, PHA transfer or DC you will get to know and loathe OASIS

the instuctions are about 4 inches thick (small font, double sided) and the form around 14-25 pages depending on your agency. i suggest going to the cms site and looking up oasis...it is the cornerstone of assessment and reimbursement in home health, and everyone from top to bottom better be well versed in it, or you'll never get paid.

there are websites dedicated just to oasis...:bluecry1:

My VNA did a series of 1 hour classes covering each of the OASIS MO questions thoroughly. Each year ( or more often if needed), we have an update class on the changes to it. We still have new RNs watch them...while somewhat boring, okay alot boring - it was very helpful in understanding ,learning how to ask, and ultimately answer the questions. After the initial classes, the overall reimbursement rates went up!

Look up Chapter 8 under the CMS website. This whole chapter is dedicated to the Oasis and how to complete each item step by step. The OASIS is the Outcome and Assessment form that medicare requires for all medicare/medicare replacement insurances.

well, what's even more fun...."not".....is the ICD-9 coding for the diagnosis on oasis.

I'm not a darn coder, but I am now I guess.....

can anyone please explain me what oasis is???????

oasis stands for
outcome and assessment information set
. it is required data that home heath agencies must supply to medicare in order to bill and get payment from medicare for the service they provide to medicare and medicaid beneficiaries. this is the webpage on the medicare site about it:
http://www.cms.hhs.gov/oasis/09a_hhareports.asp

does every home care company uses this???????

if they service any medicare or medicaid clients they do.

is this something only upper management is involved with or do field nurses know about it too!!!!!!

everyone working in the company knows something about it because what you document usually is important to the company getting reimbursed by medicare.

If you need help coding you should take the Lisa Selman coding class. I took it and I missed getting certified by 3 lousy points. I get a free redo and I know I can pass it this time. It makes your coding go so much faster and you know what to look for when doing your assessment.

There is a sticky at the top of this forum about OASIS hints and websites that you might find useful.
