Nursing Watches

Published

Hey y'all! Just wondering before I make a big investment in a nursing watch or a watch in general. I don't wear them very often but I'd like to get used to wearing one and using one for when I'm in nursing school and beyond. My boyfriend wants to gift me the Apple Watch Sport since I do half marathons and small races and exercise to try to stay in shape, however I also found a Baby G shock 'nursing watch' that I am interested in. Any opinions out there from nurses who are already in school or in the field on watches? Thanks so much!

Cheap is better for work. It's gonna get beat up and soiled.

Agree. You'll be dealing with body fluids, isolation patients, etc. Better to wear a watch in nursing that doesn't have any sentimental value or monetary value so that if something happens, it can just go in the trash.

Cheapest thing you can find with a second hand, that you can clean with alcohol (or bleach if necessary), something that won't upset you if it gets destroyed at work. Consider it disposable.

I like mine to have a stretchy band too so I can move it up when washing my hands. You can get a timex with these kind of bands from target.

Don't invest in an expensive nursing watch. A watch is a watch, there is nothing special that makes it a "nursing" watch. Must have features are a watch that is water resistant and that has either a second hand or a digital display with seconds showing. Nice to have features are date and an alarm/timer. The timer function is nice to remind yourself of time sensitive tasks, for example a med that needs to be given at a specific time.

Of the two options your are interested in the Baby G might be a better choice as it is all plastic so it will be much easier to clean and sanitize as needed. A smart watch is nice [i have one] but I wouldn't suggest wearing one as a student or new nurse as the interruptions from notifications are not school or work related and can be distracting.

Thank you!! This is a major help!

Definitely go with cheap. My friend threw out a watch during clinical because there was no salvaging it after a patient's bowel movement got all over it.

Your watch will get poop on it. Don't get poop on a $400 smart watch.

A Baby G is a nice watch for nursing. It cleans up well, and you can use harsh chemicals to clean it with. G Shocks will last for years.

You can get the cheapo $10 watches from Target that will get the job done just fine, but you will probably need to replace them every couple of years.

I've had $7 watches from Wal-Mart last several years! (I did have to replace the batteries.) :)
