Nursing Responsibilities

Are BSN's working in the hospital responsible for bedpans? Or is it a nursing aid or orderly?

well....just my :twocents:...but in my opinion, bedpans, am care, foleys- everything involving patient care, is everyone's job. there is no delineation of whose job is what. yes, cna's are there is assist us in care of our patients, but if they are busy and you are there.....the responsibility lies with you.

It is everyones responsibility, you can't ask someone else to do it if you won't. It can be delegated if you are too busy, but if you are not busy, you can empty it just as well as the aid/orderly.

in nursing, there is no such thing as, "that's not my job".

we do everything, from cleaning incontinent pts to running sev'l lines/gtts, anticipating any/all adverse reactions.

when it comes to bedside care, you will find that titles and degrees mean very little.

Put yourself in your patients place. If you need to go you don't care what what initials are behind a name. We all have two hands and we all should help equally.

There are no nursing aids or orderly's in hospitals. They are called CNA's or Certified Nursing Assistants.

What bothers me is that you said is a BSN. There is no differentiation between RN CNA AND or BSN when it comes to doing basic tasks that need to be done. BSN is not exempt from any of those duties

Actually that's not quite true. Not all facilities in the US utilize certified nursing assistants, some still use orderlies and regular nursing assistants. And I believe oversees their titles are different than here.

I am an RN with a BSN who was a CNA prior to that. A title didn't prevent me from caring from my patient's basic needs and that included providing a bedpan.

It's everybody's responsibility, RN, BSN, CA, CNA or whatever. Having an RN/ BSN doesn't mean you no longer do the nitty-gritty, nasty, hold your breath chore of putting patients on bedpans, wiping butts, and emptying pan into toilets. Yeah they teach delegation... but if you're right in the room with the patient when said patient asks to be placed on the pan, then take an extra minute or two to do it yourself. Its acceptable to tell ur CNAs that "Ms. So and So is on the pan, can you please just take her off it later?" I've worked with several nurses who think bathing and toileting patients are beneath them and that just ticks me off. :angryfire

I would say it is your responsibility since you are ultimately responsible for the care of the pt.

I am not sure what you are truly asking, but yes, if the need arises, and assistance is not readily available. then yes , you are. It is part of nsg care just like everything else.

Ditto: it is every nurses and nursing staff's responsibility to perform all basic nursing care.
