nursing dynasty?

My sister followed me into nursing, after changing her major from biology. I was a big influence on her decision.

Most of my family are in the math and sciences. I have an uncle with a PHD in Math. and counsins with degrees in science or math. My sister and I are the only nurses though. :)

My Mom is an LPN, I'm an RN, and my sister is also an RN. My brother just became a CNA, and is going for his RN soon. My 2 oldest girls refuse to think about nursing as a career. They are in college studying other subjects. My 13 yo dgt is thinking about becoming a nurse.

Mom is a nurse as are her two sisters. I wouldn't have anything to do with nursing my first time around in school (I think it had something to do with the nursing stories at the dinner table!!) but I went back for a second degree in nursing and I can now tell those stories while eating.

I have a legacy in my family. My grandmother was a diploma RN back in the 1920s, and my mom was kind enough to send me her old OB text books. AMAZING history there. She married a pharmacist and never really worked much as a nurse after that. One cousin (and another grand-daughter of the original nurse), is a nurse of more than 30 years, starting as an LPN on nights, supporting her family by herself. She later got her BSN and now works days in a GI lab and loves it. Other cousin is an LPN who does home daycare and not actively practicing as a nurse. An aunt is a peds nurse of 40 years' duration and going STRONG, splitting her time between Arizona in winter and Minnesota in summer. She has no plans of permanently retiring.

Sooooo then comes me, graduated in 1997 and a late-blooming nurse. Yes, a dynasty exists in my family, you might say. :rotfl:

Hi, my daughter is in her final year of high school and says she wants to be a nurse. My family has a strong history of nurses with 3 generations of nurses (me, my mother and my grandmother). I have not brainwashed her from birth, but there is no doubt she has heard a lot of nurse stories being around me (and my friends), her grandmother, and hearing about her greatgrandmother.
The situation got me wondering ... How many of you have daughters/sons that have chosen to become nurses?

My Mom is a retired RN..........42 years in pediatrics. I went to a Diploma school right out of HS......worked in critical care and got my BS degree. Now I'm working on my MSN....26 years later.

The dynasty will stop here.......my son has interest in science, medicine but not nursing........because that would be "gay." It's still tough to overcome stereotypes in the US. As pay has increased more men have been entering nursing but they still struggle with the stereotypes. I don't know too many HS age boys who would actually consider entering a nursing program. I have several friends who have daughters considering nursing even though my friends are not nurses. Most of their interest comes from knowing that they will have a job after college or having their education sponsored/paid for by a hospital.

No nurses in my family - although my BIL's ex-wife and girlfriend (yes, the same person - don't ask) is considering nursing school. I come from a science/math type of family too - my dad is an engineer, and my brother is a doctor.

My older sister is an RN, and I have one aunt that is an RN, one of my uncles is an MD. Almost everyone else (including both my parents) went into teaching. I hadn't planned on going into nursing while I was growing up,but I knew there was NO WAY I would ever teach!

My Mother, two sisters, and sister in law are RN's. My niece is a CNA going to RN school. My nephew is an LVN, and I start RN school in January :)

I am the only nurse in my family although I have a sister who is a CNA and took some prereqs for nursing but never went to nursing school. I now have a 13 year old great-niece who has shown a lot of interest in being a nurse for the past 2 or 3 years. I can't decide if I want to encourage her or discourage her. I remember the days of excitement and wonder of being a new RN. After 30 years...I am burned out and really tired of the politics and night shifts and rude, inconsiderate doctors, and working holidays, and working sick cause you know you will be in trouble if you dare call in, and all the stuff that makes the "why I don't wanna be a nurse anymore" list.

My grandmother on my mom's side was a nurses' aide, and three of her children became nurses, so I grew up with two RN aunts and an LPN uncle (who married an RN). My sister (9 years older than me) started nursing school but dropped out to raise a family. Later she & our dad entered the ADN program at the same time. A few years later, I found myself entering the same program.

So now, I have an aunt who's been a nurse "forever", a married aunt & uncle who are still nursing, plus my dad, my sister, myself... and now my brother is thinking of joining our ranks!
