In light of a recent topic about how our elder's would be better off in facilities with hired help visiting nurses/aides. I think this was appropo. Granted some facilities and care staff give excellent and compassionite care, but there are enough of these abuse cases that families of elder's need to take a lomg hard look at how residents are being cared for.

Hppy

This is why my family is killing ourselves taking care of elders at home, even though they need a lot of care. I realize that many people do not even have this as an option due to the needs of the elder or are not able to withstand the difficulties (emotional, physical, financial) of doing so. I am not a trusting person to begin with and anything like this coming near my elders absolutely sickens me. I don't know how I could ever let anyone into their homes.

I also know there are many kind, compassionate and dedicated caregivers. The problem is I am not comfortable with running little experiments (with my elders' lives) to find them.

This is my worst fear.  I don't have children and the thought that some day something might happen to me where I need care and can't fend for myself at an old age frightens the you know what out of me!

I worked in a LTC facility for 4 years (and a very nice one with great resident/aide ratios), and it solidified the fact that I don't ever want my parents in a nursing home if I can help it. If they do end up there, I'll be there every single day.

I caught a coworker smacking an elderly man with dementia's arm because he was trying to help her put his shirt on, and she was out the door before the end of the shift. I can't imagine discovering that one of my sweet ladies or guys was viciously abused... what if that was one of my family members?
