Nurses General Nursing

Published

I've been working for a year as a nurse here in California and yesterday a friend of mine from told me that she's been hired in a nursing home to work as a nurse. The catch is that I know for a fact that she only has a tourist visa which to my knowledge doesn't give her the right to work here legally. When I told her about it, she told me that $5 from her stating salary of $25 would be given to NSO as "protectors" money.

I was shocked at what I heard from her. Is this really true? Does anybody else know of an incident like this?

hello and welcome to allnurses.com

glad you joined and hope you enjoy the site.

nso is nurses service organization http://www.nso.com/

this organization provides () for nurses. something that many nurses here in the u.s. carry for their own protection. the $5, i'm sure, goes to pay for the yearly premium.

there are many threads here with discussion about malpractice insurance coverage. here is one very informative thread:

? get malpractice: importance of professional liability insurance in managing risk

the payment deducted from her hourly salary hasn't anything to do with her visa or right to work in the u.s.a. those are totally seperate issues.

I think the nursing home that is employing your friend is knowingly taking advantage of her, and engaged in the fishy activity of hiring a nurse who cannot legally work in the good ole U.S. I also find it questionable and unethical that they are receiving $5 of her hourly pay rate for every hour that she works.

I might be incorrect, but my gut feeling tells me that something ain't right in this situation!

Sorry but your friend is working illegal and if caught (which is very likely as searches are ongoing for illegal workers) is looking at a ban up to 10 years. Although the NH is doing something illegal in hiring them it is your friend's responsibility to make sure they are working legally. As sirI points out the payment has nothing to do with visa, they are in a lot of trouble. Check out the International forum plenty of threads about retrogression and may be worth getting your friend to read it.

There's no way an NSO policy costs that much annually. I'd tell your friend to document everything, quit then report the nursing home. Of course she could wind up in a bit of trouble herself.

I don't see how the NH could get away with hiring an illegal knowingly. They should be reported. I thought too, that the NSO was paid directly from the subscriber. I could be wrong of course.

yes your friend is working illegally and needs to get out of there, before ICE shows up. that NSG home is in big trouble if they have anymore illegals working there. they are looking for illegals now and she could easliy be caught. i wish her the best of luck and hope she can get a working visa soon.
