According to the NMC website:
The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) will be launching a comprehensive consultation in late Spring/early Summer to ask registrants their view on the level of increase in the registration fee to be introduced in 2007.
See the full press release here http://www.nmc-uk.org/aFrameDisplay.aspx?DocumentID=1388
So what do you all think? Should we be helping the NMC by giving them our hard earned cash to top up their reserves and protect the general public - or should the general public be paying for this??
They also say:
the fall in new recruitment in the NHS having in turn led to a collapse in numbers of overseas-trained nurses and midwives seeking registration. This is projected to lead to an anticipated loss for the NMC of £9 million over the next three years.
Could this be due to the processes they put in place that deter nurses from overseas from applying - e.g. no placements available etc.

I cannot beleive they are raising the cost yet again, it's not that long since they did it last time.

Maybe they'll reconsider how difficult they've made it for overseas nurses to apply.

if they are not careful they will price themselves out and more will leave the profession and then the people left will have to pay more.

or should the general public be paying for this??
I have canvassed the opinion of the general public:
My neighbours have refused to chip in to pay fees for Belinda-Wales and I. I have resorted to standing outside Tesco with a tin and some sticky labels with 'Support me. Support the NMC - Protecting You Ungrateful Lot' on them.
My village has a few thousand people living in it so a few pence per month each should cover the fees of all nurses, midwives and health visitors (in old money) living here. I am planning to lobby the Community Council on this and have made a banner with 'NMC - 660,000 Registrants can't be wrong' on it to take with me.
I will also discuss a means tested approach to the public funding me. As our area is affluent, I may come up against a potential drop in funding as locals may have taken private health plan out and would therefore be exempt from payment. Obviously, I would expect those who use nursing services or will do in the future (e.g overweight children, smokers, heavy drinkers, the elderly) to be paying more per month and I have not ruled out a Salvation Army type approach to the local pubs this weekend rattling my tin even harder at those seen smoking or having a few too many beers.
I have planned a rally to gain public awareness of this issue. I have been told I will have absolutely no support whatsoever from doctors, dentists, AHPs, lawyers or anyone at all that has to pay their own registration fees. I have another two banners; one has 'For sale - Large Central London property. Please telephone J Asbridge' and the other has 'Move the NMC to some industrial estate in Birmingham to release fees'.
My parents (pensioners - are they expected to join in the funding?) have told me that at 40 years of age and with a steady job, I should not be asking them for money.
Let's face facts. The political parties are not even going to spend the time over a pint after PMQs discussing this. There are far greater areas of need for revenue raising/taxation (health, education, law and order, Iraq and Afghanistan) than nurses.
It is a non-starter. No debate. It's not going to happen.
By the way, whilst I get the flogging a dead horse bit, does anyone know why these heads are eating this horse? Are they from Belgium? :deadhorse

Hey great idea I know a lovely run down area in Manchester which would be cheap for them to run their offices from and thus reduce expenses. Can you imagine how much money they would save being out of London:lol2:
Maybe they've done it intentionally and don't need to reconsider it.
God bless the NMC. They do a fantastic job. Imagine what they could do if they increased license fees. Protect the public even more.

Perhaps. Personally, I think there is some needless red tape. But, of course that's coming from a foreign nurse who was interested in trying the UK. As it is, Wales will have to wait :) Oh well, my dog is very happy with the weather here... Maybe I'll go after he goes to doggy heaven.
