Curious what kind of cribs every uses for their newborns. We have steel and are considering going to wood for the "homey feel". Any experiences with wood versus steel? I think infection control may have an issue with wood?

We use steel, one of the smaller hospitals in our system uses wood. Haven't heard of an issue with infection control but I personally like the steel cribs because they are so easy to clean.

Where I worked as a Mother/Baby nurse, we had some steel, some wood. Where I work now they have only wood. For me the biggest issue is how much heavier the wood bassinets are! So bulky. Enough hospitals use wood that I doubt infection control is a major issue, but I haven't really looked into it myself.

I know wood anything in our hospital is frowned upon by IP&C - because of its porous nature I think.

I second LibraSun,

At my last facility we had steel and then replaced most of them with the wood bassinets. The wood is very pretty and has nice cabinets so it does really give it that homey feel. However they are much more bulky and heavier to push. Love the look just wish they were lighter.

I prefer the wooden ones. They seem a bit more cozy than the steel cribs.

Our hospital just got rid of all our wood rockers and cribs due to when the finish becomes worn/scratched/dinged it be becomes more porous and it is

then considered a carrier of "bio- burden".

You could go with fake wood. Laminate?
