Newbie Here!

Hey everyone :)

I've been reading for a few days and thought I'd introduce myself.

I'm 31, married with one son and am taking some courses at my local cc in preparations of applying to the evening ADN program in July.

Right now I'm taking Computer Lit online (required in the program but not a pre-req), Human Dev. Across The Lifespan online (also required but not a pre-req), Basic Math fast-track 1st 8wks everyday 9:30-11 (needed a refresher) and Beginning Algebra (pre-req) fast-track 2nd 8wks everyday as well. Next semester I'll be taking Chemistry which is a pre-req. I already have my 2 English's, Gen. Psycology, Sociology & Gov't. I took Accounting about 10 years ago (under a different major) and didn't do well, so I plan on retaking that next semester to raise my GPA as well as perhaps Microbiology. Not sure about the 2 sciences together though. Once I get into the program (crossing fingers!) I'll need A&P 1&2, Microbiology if I don't take it next sem., Pharmacology & of course the actual Nursing Interventions.

At my college there is no waiting list. They take 30 applicants and if you don't get chosen you have to retake the test in 6 months. I plan on applying for the LPN courses at the technical college if I don't get in next fall.

We also run a business out of our home. We have a state licensed daycare. Dh is here with me fulltime and takes over when I'm at school and studying. DS goes to preschool everyday 1-4, which coincides with the daycare kids nap :)

Whew, I think that's about it! I'm looking forward to getting to know you guys and I'll probably be full of questions the further into this I get.

    Before taking your accounting again (unless you just want to), find out if it will even count towards your GPA for nursing school. Talk to an advisor about it. ;)

    My program only looks at the GPA for the pre-reqs & support courses that is required by the Nursing program.

    Overall, yes you could raise your GPA, but it probably won't do you much good as far as your nursing school GPA.

    Either way, good luck with your education & congrats on your decision to become a nurse! :)

She also mentioned that some people get in with low GPAs, just above 2.0, but score well on the NLN exam. Basically they pick the top 30 of those who test and then check to be sure their GPA is at least a 2.0.

    So what do you guys think? Is it worth it to re-take acct? Or would you go ahead and take a course that actually counts towards the program?

    I personally wouldn't, unless I found that I could not get accepted without retaking it.

    It still seems a little strange that your nursing school would look at courses that doesn't even pertain to nursing, other than the required speech, english, etc. However, I would go for classes that you need for your nursing degree, and get those over with. If you find you don't get in after taking the NLN & have all your non-nursing courses complete, then retake the accounting.

    ...this is just my opinion, you need to do what you think is best for your situation. Did you speak with a college advisor, or someone in your nursing school's office?

    Unless you don't mind being a bookkeeper you can't get anywhere in accounting as a career without a bachelors degree in it. There is more flexibility in nursing. The hardest math I've ever had to use as a nurse was some basic algebra. My swan song as an Accounting major was Cost Accounting. I did awful in it and just couldn't understand what the heck they were doing. I thought they were taking math and using it in some bizarre way I couldn't figure out in order to come up with answers. :chuckle

    It sounds like getting chosen for this nursing program strongly rests on your performance on the "test" you have mentioned. What "test" is this? Something they have developed on their own or one of the national ones? You didn't elaborate on it.

    The lady I spoke to worked in the nursing dept.

    When I said test, I meant the NLN exam. Sorry I was unclear.

    I'll keep thinking about it, but after what she said today, I'm leaning towards just moving on & leaving my poor acct grade behind me. That way I can take Microbiology next semester and have that out of the way.
