Hi guys,

I am wanting to move to Amercia, and I just wanted to know if someone could explain everything I need to do and what all the abbreviations stand for.

Everytime I read something on another tread I get lost because I can't understand what you guys are talking about ( sorry if It sounds stupid!)

I get lost with all the CNFSDCDGTDDN. I know it sounds like a stupid question, but I am just starting out in this process and already getting lost:uhoh21:

Anyway i would appreciate any help you can offer

Take care

Are you looking for general medical abbreviations? Here is a link to get you started:

http://www.globalrph.com/abbrev.htm

As far as the procedure for becoming a US nurse, it can be confusing and it does involve a lot of cryptic wording and abbreviations. But if you see something that confuses you, don't be shy - just ask. People will be glad to clear it up for you.

On this board there are several people who have expertise in gaining licensure from abroad. I am sure that they will be along to help you shortly.

Specializes in Medical and general practice now LTC.

there are a couple of threads at the top of this forum which explain the process for foreign nurses to go through to nurse in the US, have a good read and then ask away :)

Hi guys,

Well I did look at the treads at the top of the page and It did answer alot of my questions about things like CVS, CES, CGFNS and so forth.

Im still not totally sure about what i need to do and most importantly who to contact first to get the process up and running!

I know I must sound stupid (what else is new!):uhoh3: but if someone could just let me know how to get the ball rolling that would be good.

Once again you guys are really helpful and thank you to you all for such good advice.:blushkiss

To get the ball rolling we need to know where you stand first.

Do you have your RN license?

Where do you want to go?

Have you completed visa screen?..........

welcome to our cozy little group.:balloons:

before i can give you specifics as to what you need to do, you need to let us know where you wish to work. things will vary between states.

i can tell you that if you trained in australia, then the english exas are waived for you. you will only need to complete the nclex-rn exam, and get a visa screen certificate.

however, depending on when you graduated, you may not have enough hours in all areas. the us requires that you be a generalist, meaning that you have hours in peds/maternal health, and mental health. even if you work strictly with adults, it os required for here, etc.

Thank you to nursemargo and Suzanne for getting back to me so quickly.

nurseMargo - No not as yet I don't have my RN license. ( I started nursing course but had to leave as my husband became very sick. He is fine now and I am ready to start back at school )

I want to go to NY state and live in and around the Brooklyn area.

No I have not yet completed the visa screen. I know I have to have license before then, but i just want to know the steps I have to take when I am ready. xoxox

Suzanne- can you recommend any UNI's in Australia that have clinical and theory experence in the obove subjects that you have just listed. I have looked into that myself, but you might know of a specific one. Once I have got my license, what do I do then. Who do I contact first, What is a BON?

You guys are great!!!!

Im so glad I have such helpfull people to talk to

Cheers- nurse 07

BON is the Board of Nursing. Each state here has their own.

NY requires that you get a CVS done by CGFNS before they will permit you to sit for the exam.

I would worry about completing your program first, there is not one thing that can be done until that time. Nothing to prepare in advance.

As far as where you can make up the hours, check with your school first, then try some of the other programs around you. Not sure exactly what is available down there.
