You should definitely get BLS. It's probably a good idea to get ACLS, and I'm not sure of other certfications. I'm also a new grad looking for jobs...good luck to you.

Congratulations to both of you. You must have your basic BLS before you apply for a new grad position. ACLS is also another way to go because that's more advanced. LVN's need to be IV Certified, but since you're a foreign educated nurse it wouldn't be a bad idea just to take an IV certification course because I know the education is a bit different there in the Philippines than it is here. When I went for my IV Certification we had a new grad nurse from the Philippines who wanted to get experience because they didn't do that while she was in school. I don't know if they weren't allowed during their rotation, or she just never had the opportunity because of the student/patient ratio during her clinical rotation was very high. Either way, I would highly suggest doing it for practice. Good Luck to both of you.

BLS is mandatory for any job. Obtain that first and keep it maintained. Then you can consider getting ACLS on your own. Many employers will pay for this course after you get hired, if the position requires it. You may want to maintain ACLS certification on your own. Same goes for PALS if you anticipate working in a peds environment and NRP for neonatal work. Be aware though that all of these start to get pricey, around $200 for ACLS, PALS, NRP. That adds up every two years. You might want to wait to see what your job requires after you have obtained your BLS certificate.
thanks for ther information.. :) im looking at getting the BLS asap.. and maybe i'll look into the IV certification as well.. coz in the philippines, student nurses are not generally allowed to do that.. or maybe just in the rotations i got.. i dont know abt other schools.. you can only get your IV training once you passed the local boards.. it's really different here but im hoping it wont be a big problem.. any idea where i can get the IV training? thanks again..
Go to the CA BRN website. There is a page on there that lists IV/Blood Withdrawal providers. I have posted it before and will look it up in a minute for you. Be aware that, while the course would be helpful, the only practice you get in starting IVs is three successful 'sticks' that are required to pass the class. If you want more practice, look for a phlebotomy course at a local community college.
Sorry, not the BRN website. This is on the LVN/PsychTech website. http://www.bvnpt.ca.gov/education/schools/iv_bw_providers.shtml

i have IV training in the Phil. to be expired till 2011, i dont know if it is consider here.
RN's don't need to be IV certified. They have the opportunity to practice it while doing their clinical rotations. It's us LVN's that need to be IV Certified. So you don't need to worry about it unless you plan on returning home to work. Other than that it's useless here. Just go to the website posted above and check out the IV cert schools and enroll in one of them so you can get practice. Good Luck
When working in the US, you will need US credentials.
