Moving to Canada.

I am currently a LPN in the US and want to move to Canada. Can I work as a LPN there? Is it hard to find a job? I really want out of the US as I find the direction our country is going in a bit scary. But that's another topic for another time. If anyone can share their experiences of moving from the US to Canada or know of any websites with good information, I would appreciate it!

Thanks!

All i can say is i hope you are not going to Canada because of the direction of the health care system because i can tell you it is definately no bed of roses there!!! I am a Canadian living in the United States. As for your licensure up there - you will need to recertify up there. This may include an examination. You would need to contact the Board of Health in the province you are moving too - it may also depend on where you recieved your training. Good luck!!

Where in Canada are you planning on moving? I have worked as a LPN in a few different provinces so I may be able to give you an idea on the job prospects for that province.

I was thinking BC.

I am in BC right now and I can tell you that the lower mainland has very very very poor job prospects for LPN's. I was here for almost 5 months before even getting a casual position. Good luck if this is the area you are planning on moving too.

The smaller towns in BC you may have more luck in though. I lived in Kamloops for a while and had no problem finding full time work in LTC.

You would have to contact the college of nurses for the province in which you wish to work( our licensing bodies are called colleges). The links to all the colleges are located at the top of the Canadian Forum. The college would evaluate your education and decide if you were eligible to write the CPRNE, which is the national exam that all PNs have to pass.

You may get a better response if you posted your question on the Canadian Forum. Good luck.

Here you go and good luck

College of Licensed Practical Nurses of BC

contact these people they will point you the right way i wanted to move to Vancover Island and wow the red tape OMG well good luck. And there are no jobs in BC they will tell you that. These are my thoughts use them as you wish

As mentioned you still have to meet province requirements and will be expected to sit and pass the Canadian LPN exam. I think finding employer may be your biggest issue

I'm Canadian citizen living and working in Florida as an LPN trained here.

I plan on returning to Alberta, here is what I need to do:

Apply to the college of LPNs in Alberta and pay their fee.

Send form to BON of Florida to be completed.

Send another form to my employer to be completed.

Request transcripts and course descriptions from all colleges and training schools.

The Alberta College of LPNs will then review everything and decide if I meet their requirements to take the Canadian LPN board exam. If I don't meet their requirements they will tell me which additional courses I must take.

I'm going to start this process next month. I've no idea how long it will take. Then again, I don't know how long it will take me to sell my house.

Also OP, what is your work status in Canada? Can you legally work there? Better figure that out before thinking about applying for a Canadian license.
