Mommie Dearest

I just saw the old movie about Joan Crawford, 'Mommie Dearest'. If the portrayal is accurate, it seems to me that this woman had some kind of mental illness. If you have seen it, what do you think? Narcissistic? Bipolar? Paranoid? The way she seemed so manic...frantically chopping down rosebushes in the middle of the night...and her outbursts...must have been very scary to grow up with her.

I saw that movie years ago, and yes...the woman must have had all those mental illnesses you mentioned already. To heck with the bushes she chopped up all night long....I cried for her children. :crying2: I've always wondered why no one knew enough about her abusing her kids and take them away from her. It was her daughter who wrote the book "Mommie Dearest" ya know.

I definitely thought she had a lot of issues when I watched it again a few years ago. Bipolar, obsessive-compulsive disorder, narcissistic...

We used to watch that movie a lot as kids, and I was always thankful my parents were very good to me and never put me through the stuff that poor Christina had to go through.

My brother, on the other hand, used to hit me with hangers, ranting, "No wire hangers EVER!!!"

I saw a documentary on Joan Crawford on TCM earlier this year, which was narrated by her daughter Christina (author of "Mommie Dearest"), who recalled that she was also abused as a child. Tragic.

Yes, all three, w/a liberal dose of substance abuse for good measure. And she WAS ALLOWED TO ADOPT. Scary, no? What money can be in this (and most other) societies.:sniff:

A movie was made starring Mary Tyler-Moore regarding the orphanage where Joan Crawford, among others, adopted her children. Interesting reading.

If this is true (note, the book was written after her death and she had no way of disputing anything), I just wonder if she was out right mean and evil.

So i saw this week in the news that Bigotry may soon be classified as a mental illness.......Is being evil a mental illness? I mean, it is NOT "normal" so why is it not a mental illness?

because being evil is a choice....a mental illness is not.

as for bigotry being classified as a mental illness, that has to be one of the more ludicrous speculations i've heard in a long time.

bigotry is ignorance, fear and/or upbringing- but not an illness. where do these people get their data and rationales from? (shaking head)

OK, I agree with you, BUT as my psych prof would ask...

how can you quantify that someone who is evil or a bigot can make that choice? many can but how can we be sure they all do, just as boderline personality disorder is how someone from a dysfunctional upbringing learns as a coping method, they can (rarely though) learn to cope normally.

I just read a thread on here about a bpd person who was a social worker and went from multiple involuntary commitments in the psych ward to productive employee and all round healthy, so wasnt that a choice that person made to modify behavoir?
