Microbiology at MCC

Funny thing....when I talked to a counselor at MCC about my credits transferring (I was worried about the sciences), she said they tell students to take the AP's at Baker and transfer them back over because it is easier to get in at Baker, go figure huh?....lol.

yeah I am thinking of just taking micro at OCC or something, since I live in oakland county anyway. MCC is frustrating sometimes!

I believe OCC implemented that priority registration system too. People who have taken more credits there get first crack at classes and the sciences always fill up....

I know Wayne (and probably Oakland U) teaches micro during the summer and it never fills up. The only bummer is that it's a lot more expensive than a CC class, but if you really want to get it done before the program and the CCs are full that option is out there.

I hope you are able to register for some section somewhere!

OCC does have priority registration, but just based on the number of credits you have not if they all come from OCC. I transferred to OCC with 35 credits from WSU (Accounting credits) and I was able to register first for my science classes.

Have you put yourself on every waitlist they have for it? I was going to to take nutrition at MCC and could not get in one so I wait listed myself on all classes they had and I did finally get a class. I ended up canceling it though until I find out if I even get in the program.

I cant waitlist for it until registration starts, its just a time crunch thing, getting to done by fall, and waitlisting doesnt always work (i was on two waitlists for ethics this semester and didnt get either one.) It just seems unfair that I have to wait two extra days when I have every intention of going to MCC for nursing and have not applied elsewhere.

I know I could take it at Wayne or OU but I have my BA from wayne and cannot afford anymore $1,000 classes!

There were two first semester nursing students in my pathogenic micro class. Both are still going strong in the nursing program :).

i just started the nursing program in january and took micro this past fall. i opted out of starting earlier because i knew it would be a lot to start the program, take micro and work(i don't have a choice i have to work). if you don't have to work, then it can be done, but if you do have to, i think it can be a bit tricky to try and manage everything...but that's just me. i just decided that it wasn't worth trying to juggle everything for a chance to graduate just a bit sooner, after all if you were to get lower then a c in any of your classes that semester, you would have to wait to retake something and that means not progressing in the program until you do, which blows the whole graduating a bit earlier theory out of the water. it's a personal choice and it's one that i debated, too. i decided to take the advice from other students and the instructors in the nursing program at orientation and take micro separate. i was actually surprised how tough micro was. i was warned about a&p but nobody warned me about micro! i managed to do very well, but was just surprised, so be prepared. whatever you decide, best of luck!

i always laugh at how people ask questions to those who are in the program and have had a certain experience, but then they are flooded with people who aren't accepted yet or "know a person". cracks me up.

anyway, it really isn't too bad taking micro at the same time as the 1500's. that's my only experience since i started the nursing program mid-semester. the 1500’s are easy and you only have class monday plus a lab, so there is no reason not to be able to handle it. seriously. any full time college student at any university anywhere has multiple classes at one time….and they all manage!

the scariest part is really the doubt of whether i would be able to register for micro since it had to be that semester, and when i did if it would fit into my schedule. the registering system at mcc is absolutely horrendous, so it really is a toss up of if you can get in. i would recommend trying to get in asap or going through another school with a guaranteed spot just incase. i also know someone who took it online through an out-of-state cc and she said it was great.

thanks for the info! and yes the thing i am most worried about is not being able to register for it, i am pretty sure i will do fine in it, if i get in that is. luckily in the fall there are quite a few sections of it. i have had no trouble getting my other classes, i just register the second i can, but now since they are letting students with 40 credits register first, its kind of a different situation. i am just hoping those students with tons of credits have already taken micro. the summer sections are every single day, which doesnt quite work for me since i have a full time job.

Does anyone know when registration begins for Spring/Summer at MCC? It should be coming up soon? I'll be taking chemistry if I get denied for MCC's nursing program and I wanna be able to sign up ASAP.
