Micro Fall 2008

Published

 I am taking Micro this fall 2008 at BMCC in the NYC. I received A's in all my other pre-reqs. I HEAR MICRO IS A MONSTER! Honestly, I am a tiny bit scared. My micro class I am taking in the fall also has writing intensive attached to it. I really want to do well in the course, so I can go on to my clinicals in Spring 2009. Can anyone give me advice, wesites, or any materials I should look out for to help me prepare for this mercy-less course.:scrying:

There is a "sticky note" at the top of this forum. Check it out. They have provided us with some great info to help us through several subjects.

Good Luck

NYC, I replied to your post in the Micro Heads Up thread. Micro is a great course. It's so interesting you won't mind working hard. Check out my post for online sites to give you a leg up. Good luck!

thanks! I think as long as I stay on top of my game during micro, I should be fine. I hear its really interesting..thanks for the advise.

I took Microbiology last fall and I actually enjoyed the class, especially the lab! It's so much better than poking at cat carcasses and sheep brains in Anatomy lab....shudder!!!

Seriously though, start a study group, go to your professor's office hours and ask him/her for help if you need it. My professor was very helpful, hopefully yours will be too! Good luck!

Thanks for the encourgement. I am actually starting to look forward to MICRO this fall 2008, thanks to all the support from the wonderful members of all nurses..

Hey NYC nursewannabe-

I took all of my pre-reqs at BMCC. I was really scared at first as well, b/c I took AP 2 and Microbio at the same time. I got all A's surprisingly. A lot of people warned me about it, and it definitely was tough, but if you got A's in your other pre-reqs, I think you will be fine. I had two different teachers for lab and lecture, and that made it hard b/c the lab teacher gave lecture tests as well. It was almost like having two different classes with the same material. The material is not as interesting as Anat. and Phys (to me anyway), but if you read the text and pay attention, you will be successful.

As for the "writing intensive" part of it, it will be ok. I took that as well. They just give you essay questions on the test and have some short answer questions as well. This is unusual for a science class, but don't be intimidated.

I found that it also helps a LOT to make the teacher aware of who you are at BMCC. Raise your hand, participate in class, email the teacher if you have questions. If they know that you are interested or concerned with your grade, and you care about the class, they will remember you and not think that you are just another number who doesn't want to be there.

Good luck with everything!! :nuke:

Hey CALIGIRL 24-

You are incredible! thanks for the info. I did well in all my other pre-req's. Thank you so much for the info. By the way, did you have SARA SELM for MICRO? I am taking her this FALL 2008! I am glad to know that the writing intensive potion of MICRO is not that bad. Are you in the program at BMCC?

Hey NYC nursewannabe-

I had Professor Morin-Neuhoff for micro lab, and Dr. Wool for lecture. Both teachers were pretty cool. I finished up all of my pre-reqs at BMCC and actually just moved to San Diego, CA to start RN school. I just found out that I was accepted to 2 programs here, so I'm excited.

Good luck with micro and if you need any help lemme know. THe material is kind of dry, but if I could survive the class on sundays from 9 -4pm and work full time, and taking AP2 you can do it too. :)

ps...you can also prob look up teacher reviews on rateyourprofessor.com. Some of the reviews aren't accurate, but it gives you an idea of what to expect.

I'm currently taking Micro right now and something I notice in my class is that the people who have had Biology recently are at a slight advantage because all that information from Bio is fresh in their minds. Whereas there are really smart people in my class who had Bio YEARS ago had a tougher time recalling the info. They literally would have to go home or to the library and refresh things like glycolysis, krebs cycle, DNA synthesis, etc. in order to go forward with the material.

At the same time, you shouldn't NOT study if you remember those things well, because in Micro you go into a LOT of little details that you might have not gone over in Biology. (I had a really hard Bio class and we didn't go over it, anyway.) It just helps you if you go over it still.

Micro is hard, but trust me you'll be fine. Sounds like you're off to a great start!

I am also enrolled in micro for the fall...i am so scared because if i dont pass...well i cant start my clinicals....as soon as i find out a way to overcome my fears..i will definitely share...:wink2:
