I am a graduate RN from upstate NY, considering moving to Memphis. My husband is considering transferring to a position at the new Memphis Nucor steel mill. Any info you can give me on the area and hospitals would be so appreciated. I have a a 2yr old and 4 yr old, and I don't think I want to live in inner city Memphis. We are from a fairly rural city of 30,000. I'm not sure what suburbs of Memphis are nice, close to the hospitals, and NUCOR. I'm working on a Cardiac Telemetry floor now, but would really like to work in a NICU.
What suburbs are close?
How expensive is housing?
Do any of the hospitals have childcare on site?
Do any hospitals offer relocation assistance?
Which hospitals have level III and IV NICU's??
This would be a huge move for us, I'm very nervous going to a city where I know noone. Any tips would be helpful.

southaven, ms isn't that bad. there is baptist hospital - desoto. i'm not a nurse yet so i'm not sure what hospitals have what as far as units. other notable suburbs are germantown (pretty expensive but safe), collierville (a step under germantown and still pretty safe) and cordova (middle sclass). schools? ha! put your kids in private schools. or live in the county. memphis city schools is a festering sesspool (believe me - i taught in the system for a while). i know one thing - i will NEVER send my children to memphis city schools. i'll either go broke putting them through private schools or flat out move away from memphis.
oh, and bring a gun for home protection, wherever you decide to live.

I'm about to start nursing school next month, but I can give you info on the area.
The only sections of Memphis you would want to live in are East Memphis or Midtown. And even then there are still bad parts of those areas. I am a single mom with an 18 month old son and I feel safe as can be in midtown.
Most of the hospitals are downtown. In midtown you are about a 10 minute drive from them. I grew up in Collierville (about a mile from Fayette county) and the drive from there to downtown takes about 45-50 minutes.
As far as suburbs go:
North MS - these towns are growing fast fast fast and all I really know is that the traffic is horrible and crime seems to be low.
TN suburbs:
Millington is fairly close to the downtown area and it is more "country" than the other towns.
Cordova - horrible traffic and the crime rate is growing. Cordova high school is now part of the City school system, I don't know about the elementary schools.
Collierville and Germantown - each are becoming more and more expensive to live in due mainly to people leaving Memphis.
There are more communities growing in the Northern part of the county, Arlington, for example. I don't know much about them.
AR suburbs: Many people forget about Arkansas suburbs. Way more of a rural atmosphere than across the river, but it's a short drive to downtown.
West Memphis - Gone downhill
Marion - I've actually seen nice, huge, and affordable homes here. It's a quickly growing community.
Schools - The county that Memphis is in (Shelby) has two public school districts; Memphis city schools are one district and the schools in the suburbs make up the other district. As long as I'm still breathing, my son will never attend a Memphis city school. If you choose to live in the city go to a private school. No problems with the county school system.
Hope this helps.

I live in Horn Lake, my mother lives in Southaven MS and my father lives in Collierville TN. All are good areas to live in. We actually live in the older area of Horn Lake but have never had any problems.
As far as the hospitals I am not sure because I start school next month. But I have been reading on here that alot of them do offer some kind of relocation asst. I think Methodist does for sure. I had both my children at Methodist Germantown and it was super nice. I loved it. It took about 30 mins to get there, not that bad.
As far as the traffic here, its not bad. Everyone that I know that lives in Memphis and comes here complains but everyone that lives here never has any problems. YOu will learn all the roads to get around and avoid the main roads.
As far as schools if you live in DeSoto county (MS) I would try to live near DeSoto Central Schools. My niece goes there and it is really nice. I would stay away from Horn Lake schools. We will move once I am out of school (2 yrs) and that is just before my daughter will start school. I have a 2.5 yr old and a 10 mt old.

My second post today, again discouraging someone from moving to Memphis! You're right, you do NOT want to live within the Memphis city limits. Coming from NY, I would suspect you can deal with the Memphis traffic. To commute from Collierville, TN (Shelby County) to downtown Memphis would probably take about 1 hour. Marshall County (MS), Fayette County (TN) Tipton County (TN) & Desoto County (MS) are other areas worth considering, & I think the commutes to Memphis would all average 1 hr. or less. In Shelby County, Collierville & Germantown are great suburbs. I'm partial to Collierville; it's grown a lot since I lived there in the '80s, but I would still consider it very safe. The cost of a home in Collierville probably starts at $125/sq ft. It's my understanding that the public (county) schools in Collierville are good also. I'm a student, so I don't know much about the working envirnoment at hospitals here. But I know the area very well & it's just not safe.

I am fairly new to memphis. I loved cordova and bartlett. Methodist lebonher has a nicu. It is a childrens hospital. The MED also has a nicu. Last year when I interviewed All of the hospitals were giving a relocation bonus. St. francis, Methodist, and the med (The med said that you could choose from the relocation bonus or the sign on bonus.) I'm sure that baptist does too but I cant confirm that since I never interviewed with them. Housing is not to expensive. When I was in the market to buy a home, there were many forclosures for sale that was priced well under market value. I looked at many houses that were below 150,000 in nice areas. I must admit that I was not fond of the memphis city schools which cordova is apart of. I didnt have many problems but I was amazed at how behind they were. My son was coloring shape in his 8th grade english class. and this was a weekly thing. We are in the county system now, he only spent 2 months then it was summer break so i really cant speak on it yet....

I can speak for Tipton County, TN. We lived there for about 2 years and moved back to Clarksville 5 years ago. We plan to move back when I finish school in 3 years. Munford and Brighton schools are good with Brighton probably being the best. The area is growing and it's not a bad drive into Memphis to work. Plus the cost of living is cheaper and car tags are half the cost as Memphis city limits. Memphis city schools are horrible and is the main reason we wont live in Memphis because we have 2 boys 7 & 1.
