Memorizing bones HELP!

I labeled the bones with the markings that the teacher wanted us to know and just printed them out and studied it. It really helps. Trust me!!!

With bones and muscles, memorizing them is pretty much the way to learn them.

Anyone that has read any of my anatomy posts will know that I swear by taking pictures of everything. (Ask permission first.) If you aren't able to take pics, look at the Anatomy thread in the stickies and visit those sites. (I have pics of bones, but no quizzes for them, but I do have quizzes for the muscles.) :)

You pretty much have to point at a body part, name it, then point at the fossa, etc that you need to know on that bone, and name it. Do this for each bone, or muscle, etc.

Go over and over, in your mind, or really pointing if at home.

As for the skull, yes there are many little "holes and crevices" to learn. :chuckle

I took a picture, printed it out twice, labeled one, but not the other. I studied from the photos. (I also have a little skeleton I bought on Ebay that I studied from as well.)

Pics are AWESOME! They will serve as your lab when you are not at school. There are plenty of pics online, if you aren't able to take pics in your lab. (Remember, your instructor may pull out models that you've never seen before as well. Therefore, seeing and learning from a variety of models will be an asset.

Learning the processes, etc on the inside of the skull is necessary as you will find them helpful when learning the nerves, etc. that run through them.

Don't get discouraged!!! You can do it!!!

OK last two A&P practicles, I got a B very good for me. Now our next one is on bones and I really dont expect to pass. The instructor gets specific and wants to know all the knotches, holes in the skull, etc is there any site that explains the bones in a way to understand them? Not test you but just allows you to understand a bit better? I am so worried about this next pratical in two weeks. Thanks.

I made several copies of the fill- in- the- blanks pages of my lab manual....I learned it best by having to write the names of the bones etc over and over and over and over I also went to the study labe where we had skulls and bone replicas to work with. Actually handling the bones and skull and naming the different nooks and crannies helped me to remember the names also. This particular portion of A&P took MANY MANY hours to master:uhoh21:

YES, YES, YES!!!!! Use open lab times or the science resource room (if available at your school) as much as possible!!!!!!!!!!!

The science lab at my college had "bags of bones" to practice with. I tried to find some online, but they were very EXPENSIVE. I ended up making copies of the various bones from the text (i.e. the skull, the spine, the foot, hand, etc.) and taking them with me EVERYWHERE I went, such as waiting room at the dentist's office, soccer practices, etc. Good Luck!!!

why are you telling yourself you are not expecting to pass? the bones practical was the easier in my opinion. the best things you can do, study one part at a time, get a partner and test each other and using your body. if you also know what the definitions mean, for example fossa is the latin word for ditch or trench, notch is a small hole or a gap. i think by knowing the meaning of the words, you will remember when you are looking at the bones. you cannot wait last minute and expect to remember all the bones, sutures, notches, fossa etc. study a section at a time. you can do it. i hope to hear good results. good luck and remember "determination is key to success"

I also used pictures for the bone and muscle practicals. I made copies out of my text, lab book, and any other source i could find. i labeled them over and over again.....i agree with futurenurse35....the bone practical was easier for me than the muscle.....and for sure easier than the histology practical (that thing was a nightmare!).

You are doing great and keep up the hard work. I made a 70-something on my histology practical (my lowest grade in the class) and still pulled an A....you can do it!!!!!
