hello everyone!
i have heard rumors that since mcccd changed the prereq's for the rn program the waiting lists are longer than ever. i am worried since i will be applying in july and was curious if there is any truth to the rumor's. i would appreciate any feedback and best of luck to you all.
thank you!

Last I heard the waitlist was 3 to 4 semesters depending on your preferences. The changing of the prereqs really just bumps people up by a semester, so you're still behind everyone else you were behind last semester. If the changing of the prereqs bumps the wait to another semester it washes because you can apply a semester earlier, then that semester is eaten up by coreqs you need anyway, micro, a&pII etc.
So if you were willing to wait a semester ago, this does not really effect you.

I think they lowered the pre-req requirements to off set the waitlist in my opinion. This way you work toward all of the co-req's while waiting for your name to come up instead of trying to fill time or not attend classes while you wait. Its always better to have more done when you are entering Nursing School and less classes so you can concentrate on the actual Nursing Core group. My two cents

"There are currently 1372 applicants in the database who have completed their prerequisites and are awaiting placement."
From the Nursing Program Placement Application Status page online as of today 03/22/08.

makes me glad i didn't have to wait :w00t:
Yeah no kiddin'. That's why I decided to go the ASU route instead of the MCCC route. Just takes to long for not enough degree for my taste buds.

I waited exactly a year from submitting my application and will be starting school this upcoming August. They are placing more and more students every year, so I wouldn't worry about the waitlist becoming longer. While you are waiting for MCCCD you could also be finishing your pre-reqs for ASU, that is what I did, and it will help me in the future when I go back to school to get my bachelors.
Or you could apply to the Banner program, they don't have a waitlist and place students three times a year. There are always options you just have to look for them!!

What is the Banner program?
The Banner program is the Banner Nurse Fellows Program. Their website is:
http://www.bannerhealth.com/Careers/Education/_Nurse+Fellows.htm
It is a partnership b/tw the Maricopa Community Colleges and the Banner hospitals. You can attend an information session (there is one this Thursday @ 3pm, I believe) and obtain an application. You have to be accepted to the MCCCD nursing program before you can apply, but you can start working on your application now.
You interview with Banner and if you are accepted, you will get into nursing school much much faster, but you have to make a three year commitment to work for Banner after you graduate. But you can always buy out of your contract. I believe it is around $5,000, but search previous threads to confirm this. You can find a few great threads about the program and learn lots more, I am just telling you what I have found out of the top of my head.
It is a great program...also, it is accelerated...I believe you will earn you RN in just 16 months!! :)
Good luck and hope this helps!
You do not have to be a Banner employee to be accepted to the Banner Nurse Fellows Program. However, Banner employees are guaranteed an interview...the process is competitive, and the guaranteed interview definitely gives Banner employees an edge. There is no down side to going this route.
