May Not Be able to start school due to lack of funds

Published

I am supposed to start my LPN program in October. After a long wait, I was finally accepted to fill a spot that opens up in October. At first I was very excited but then I quickly came to my senses as soon as I was told that the school does not accept loans and I know for a fact that I will get very little money from a Pell grant. I have been applying for scholarships and trying to find creative ways to come up with the very large downpayment, but so far nothing... the deadline for me to have the money is quickly coming and I am becoming more and more despondent. It looks like I will have to delay my dreams once again and I am not getting any younger. If I had been told upfront that the school does not accept Financial Aid in the form of loans then I could have been more prepared as they want a tremendous amount of money upfront... just needed to vent.

Am on the opposite end of this spectrum, don't have the money to complete a program. Either way, both of us lose out.

I am sooo sorry to hear that.. where I live we have something called WIA and its kinda like a grant. Its very helpful and you should look into it. I had to go to the Win Job Center but I don't know what it's called where you live... HTH

Good Luck!!

Wow, Im sorry to hear that too.

OP, how much does your school cost? I cant believe they dont take loan money? Did you apply for private loans?

Caliotter, how much longer did you have to go? Cant you get any student loans to tide you over? It would be shame to come this far and not finish.

I am praying that I dont end up in a similar situation. >Long story for another time but my finances are very tight and with a little luck I will get the money I need to finish school.

I have applied for the WIA program but it is a lengthy process and the funds are not guaranteed to be available in time for my deadline. If nothing pans out before my deadline, I am going to see if they will allow me to secure a spot for the next class start date. Thank you for your response!

The total cost is between 6000 - 7000 dollars and it was a surprise to me as well when I was told that they only take grants. I didn't apply for a private loan because I didn't think I would qualify for a decent rate and do not want to get further in debt due to high rates that can occur with private loans. Thank you for your response...

Yes, but I hope something comes through for you as you have come to far to turn back now...

It appears I will have to start over. I am reluctant with the whole process because I realize what a tremendous waste of money it has been. I am nearing the end of my working career. It would be a different story if I were still in my 20s.

Cali, how much time do you have left in school ? How much $$ do they want ? Not prying just HATE to see someone work hard and lose out. I've been following your journey for about three years and I feel like I kinda know you.

I understand that you don't want a loan but what is the alternative? Not becoming a nurse? Ask yourself this: How much will you earn in 2012 in your current job? How much will you earn as a nurse? If it's at least 6,000 more you have paid for school in your first year of work. 6,000 isn't really a lot of money to obtain a nursing license. People go into debt for cars etc. everyday without thinking about it and for much larger amounts than this. Just think really hard about delaying your dream. :nurse: I'm cheering for you AND Caliotter.

Thanks, I am still working on getting the money together, I decided to keep on trying until I exhaust every option... I was really down in the dumps when I wrote the first entry, but I see that I am surrounded by kindred spirits and that helped to lift me up!

Try a credit union for a personal loan. You might need to start making payments soon or can defer them. Talk to them....when you are going for career training in a good field like nursing, it's basically a sure thing that the bank will get its money back and some interest to boot!
