The physician orders Dilantin 4-8 mg/kg/day in two divided doses for an infant weighing 4.5 kg

Available: Dilantin suspension 30mg/5ml

Dosage range equals_____ mg to________mg per day

Dosage range equals ___mg to______mg per dose

To give the recommended minimum dose you would give_____ ml

To the the recommended maximum dose, you would give ______ml

I need help solving this please

How are you trying to solve this? Show us your work. People will come along and help you if we can see if or where you're going wrong.

(1) Dosage range __ to __ mg per DAY:

4-8mg/kg/day for a 4.5kg infant

(4mg/kg) x 4.5kg = 18mg

(8mg/kg) x 4.5kg = 36mg

= range per day 18mg to 36mg

(2) Dosage range __ to __ mg per DOSE:

the order was 4-8mg/kg/day in two divided doses so you just have to divide 18 and 36 by two

18mg / 2 = 9mg

36mg / 2 = 18mg

= range per dose 9mg to 18mg

(3) Minimum dose at __ ml:

= (required amount/stock on hand) x quantity or form of the drug

= (9mg/30mg) x 5ml

= 0.3 x 5ml

= 1.5ml

(4) Maximum dose at __ ml:

= same formula as number three

= (18mg/30mg) x 5ml

= 0.6 x 5ml

= 3ml

I see you're new here. Welcome!!! The custom on this forum when a student asks for homework help is to ask them to show us what they have so far. This allows us to see where the flaw in their thinking is and assist them to fix that flaw. This allows THEM to actually understand exactly how to solve their problem on their own which then does two things. It increases their critical thinking skills and increases their success when faced with similar problems. If they don't understand how to do something having another person simply filling in the blanks does not help them at all. Trust me, if a student shows us some effort on their part we fall all over ourselves in helping them and heaping On the praise when they get it!!! It's fun for us to watch the process and share the student's delight when they figure it out.

The backstory of this custom is too many times a student has joined AN. Posted a number of questions. We try to help until we figure out they are just trying to get someone to do their homework for them.

We have a few NOT new posters who will jump in to answer student questions simply because they enjoy going contrary to forum custom. I've noticed this happening more recently.

It is the custom here that you not post questions without showing your work. Our goal is to help you become the best nurse you can be. Medication calculations are going to be a daily part of your nursing life and you need to develop the skill of almost doing them in your head.

In the future you are encourage to posy your student questions here....but always show your work first. Show us the effort and we will help you find the right path.

I've noticed that too. I've worked out a whole list of problems one time ready to help step-by-step and someone just posted all the answers. Call me geeky, but I've always enjoyed dimensional analysis and helping others. I was an unofficial tutor in high school chemistry for students 1-2 grades older than me in my class.

And sadly, as you can see, not even a simple thank you from the OP!

@Esme12 *hugs back*
