Hi all!

I just found out today I got hired :) It'll be my 1st LVN job. I need advice on what to look for on malpractice insurance. Or is it all the same?

Thank you!

Many congratulations!! What area will you be working in? Check out this company and if you ask to have this moved to the general forum I bet you will get more responses. http://www.nso.com/

I'll be working at an Developmental Day Program. Similar to an Adult Day Program/Center, but for the developmentally disabled. There's an RN on staff, but I won't be working when she is. I really think malpractice insurance is necessary-ESPECIALLY for this job.

That sounds awesome! I have a friend that does Adult Day Care with mixed clients, some geri some dd and loves it. Again congratulations. I remember when I first realized I actually was a nurse, this will be a very exciting time for you.

We have a malpractice policy available under our homeowners insurance. It is specifically for nurses and is very inexpensive. If you own your home, check with your agent.

Professional liability insurance carriers:

1. Nurses Service Organization: www.NSO.com

2. Marsh Affinity: www.Proliability.com

i feel like such a newbie for asking this, but when i went on NSO, it told me the total due was $48 at the most. On PL, it told me my total was $114 at the most. is this per month or for the whole year??

I hear that state farm has their own liability? does anyone have coverage from them? am i better off going there, or places like NSO and PL?

Thank you!

These are yearly premiums. NSO gives new grads a 50% discount during their first year of nursing practice.

Yes, State Farm has a policy available. They are the ones I was talking about with the homeowners policy. I don't know if they offer it to people as an independent policy. Check it out anyway. It is worth a try. For me, it was half the cost of the full price policy that you got...and I bought it when I was just out of nursing school.

i ended up just signing with NSO. $48 for the first year doesn't seem so bad. thanks so much for the good advice! i love this site! haha

I am an LPN and work part time at a correctional facility, I can't find mal practice insurance, any ideas!

You're going to have a difficult time finding a carrier that would be willing to insure healthcare workers who are employed at correctional facilities. Here's why...

Prisons, jails, and detention centers are hot targets for lawsuits since they tend to be owned by municipalities, counties, states, and the government. Since correctional facilities are owned and operated by local and federal governments, they are viewed as "deep pockets" by the indigent inmate population. In fact, some lawyers only specialize in filing malpractice lawsuits on behalf of imprisoned plaintiffs against the state. Although the vast majority of these lawsuits get dismissed, they still cost a great deal of money to defend. Guess who pays for the filing of these expensive lawsuits? It's the taxpayers, because most malpractice insurers are prudent enough to avoid providing coverage to prison healthcare workers.

Hence, insurers do not want to take the risk of writing a policy for anybody who works in a correctional facility because the likelihood of having to use the malpractice insurance is high.
