I just decided to go into an LPN program. I am currently a pre-nursing student at a regular university working towards a BSN. I have an appt. Mon. to take the TABE test and talk to someone in admissions. After looking on the internet I found out that the program is $17,600 for 15 months!!! (Delta College, Baton Rouge, LA. I've read that it is $13K-$19K, I don't know for sure). Can anyone give me a heads up? Is this totally unheard of? How can anyone possible afford the program when FAFSA loans + grants only cover a fraction of THAT cost?? Can this program possible be justified?
Thanks!

That doesn't sound right to me. My LPN program with tuition books uniforms and everything else totals around 8k. I dont see why they would be more than that.

LVN programs at proprietary schools in CA are more than that, $24,000 on average. I believe there are a few that are more than $40,000. As long as there are people willing to pay that kind of money, there will be programs that cost that kind of money. Your best bet is through adult education programs, then community colleges. These places are reasonable in price.

I went to a community college for LVN program. I didn't have to pay anything because I got financial aid, but the whole program was less than$5,000, and I got better education and clinical sites then the private schools.
I have looked into every program they have here within an hours distance and every program is different. My main concern is the time it takes to complete the program. There is one within 5 minutes of me but the next program doesn't start until Jan. and lasts four semesters. Others have different pre-requisites. If that's the case I'd be just as well staying in the program that I am in. I have a son who went to live with his father (he was at that age that he wanted to) and now he is sooo ready to come back and live with me. I had given up real estate to go to nursing school. You can imagine that real estate isn't paying very well these days . So that's the reson for my rush. Anyway, this website has been a great help to me. It's nice to have someone to talk to about these questions I have.
Thanks .

My lpn program cost $17,000.00. There were other programs that were far less expensive but I was not accepted. I had to be realistic knowing how tough it is to get into a nursing program so I was happy getting into the more expensive school.
I have student loans and some pell grant money. I am in no position to be picky about schools. I am just happy to be accepted. Good luck with whatever decision you make.
I'm in exactly the same boat, I'm worried about not getting accepted. It's become sooo competitive. How are you doing in the program that you are in? Were your loans credit based? I know that federal student loans have a maximum amount per year, but how does it work with a 15 month program when the program costs $17,000.

Hi, that price is about what my program cost. I graduate in June and mine cost about $19,000 give or take a few. My program is only 10 months long which is what I love about it and the reason I chose it. Some are longer than that, and I wanted to be done quick. My hubby doesnt make very good money and with 3 kids to feed and a 4th on the way (I am due in July) we needed a quick way for me to make better money. I live in MA, so I cannot be of any help to you where you live, except that the price is about what you were quoted. Because of my finances (or lack there of lol) I got financial aid and got Stafford Loans (not credit based) and ended up having to pay 2,500 out of pocket. The loans and fin aid covered everything else. You might actually qualify for more if your son does go back to living with you, as you can get more money on avg if you have a dependant. Hope this helps and good luck in whatever you decide!

Two things.
First, while my school does not charge NEAR $17,000 (entire program including books & fees is $4000 for in district and near $8000 for out of district), it is not unheard of for schools to charge that much. Some students here on the West Coast and New England states seem to have the highest tuitions that you are describing.
Secondly, student loans and grants is not there to give you a full ride. Somewhere down the line the family was expected to make a contribution to the child's education. If that didn't happen, such as is my case, you are stuck with student loans, grants, possible employer reimbursement and paying the remaining costs out of your pocket. You may have to work yourself through school, many people do it, even those in the "worst" of situations, and so can you. I wasn't trying to demean you, but government programs is an annoying issue for me. :)
