lice checks

Do yall still do classroom head lice checks? I've been doing this but I feel it's a privacy issue what are your thoughts on this?

No......

No, our district did away with classroom checks a long time ago.

Still doing them, and working towards changing the policy. Rarely ever find another case in the classroom. Time consuming for me, takes away from classroom time, and violates privacy. Can't wait to be rid of them!

Yes - if we have 2 or more cases in the classroom. Yes - huge waste of time.

Totally....you don't check every kid's temperature in the class if you have 2 kids in the same class with a fever...before I would ever do a classroom head check again I'd make sure I have parent permission for every kid....it'd still be a waste of time...and...detract from education.

Yes, I have to do it. My school will NOT change the policy, despite what the dictrict md says... :(

The American Academy of Pediatrics just issued new guidance. Class checks are not recommended (as we know). Posters who are required to check, look for the guidance online in Pediatrics Volune 135, number 5 , May 2015. Lead author is Cynthia D. Devore. It may help you make your case.

Nope. I don't even check if I have another student tell me that classmate Susie has bugs crawling all over her head. Unless the "tattlers" go to the assistant principal, and then the assistant principal sends me an email telling me that I should listen to ANYONE who comes to me with ANY health concern about ANY student and that he understands that this subject "can be a difficult one to broach" with students, and that I should be concerned for the health and well-being of this particular student.

Sigh. Not that this just happened to me or anything....

Of course! :)

My district still does classroom checks unfortunately. Some of the nurses in my district are trying to get it changed, but I don't know what my school will go for it. My principal is very much into "customer service" and keeping the parents happy. Knowing someone in their class has lice, these parents want their child checked.

This year I had a mom request me to check her son daily for a week because there was a case of lice in the classroom (but he was clear) and he would be with dad so she couldn't check herself. Even after explaining he did not have lice, she still wanted him to be checked to be safe. Unfortunately at this school, we can only educate as much as we can, but at the end of the day we are still expected to keep the parents happy.

It drives me crazy! I always have teachers ask me are you going to check my class since so and so had it so I hesitantly say of course I will:sarcastic:

Nope, I was advised when I started this job to never give in to the teacher's cries and do head checks like that. And I don't.

Thanks for putting up the link to RESEARCH.
