keep your credentials up?

well, of course you keep credentials up....but how many nurse informatics people keep up the basics like CPR?

the reason I ask, is I am now moved to informatics nursing, and I fall under the Data/Finantial part of the hospital... and not under nursing at all. One of the things I had them put in my contract was that I was not to be asked to do supervision in the Hospital, and would not be mandated to take a patient assignment. (since that whole NY no overtime for nurses came out, they were looking at ways to make management cover for call ins...)

so now, I don't fall under any nursing. And my name doesn't come up for PALS, PERLS or even BLS....CPR. which many tell me is an easy out. Even in an emergency, they can't pull me away from my many projects and tell me I have to take an Med Surge assignment....if I don't even have basic CPR up to date...how could they?

what do other informatics nurses do?

and are you in a situation where they are apt to go to the office and pull you to a care area with no notice? (This happend to me all the time...even calling me out of computer training to work the floor or do discharges)

Yes I do and have kept my clinical certification, credentials, CPR, etc up to date. I also still practice clinically.

I have never practiced clinically at the same organization (during the same time) that I was also in an HIT role at......specifically to avoid the scenario you wrote about.

I used to keep my credentials up, but now I don't even bother. I have no intentions of every working as a nurse again for any amount of money. I have found my calling in the IS world, and I'm not leaving! I just wish I had found this career years ago!

Yes i keep up my PALS, Neonatal, ACLS, and CPR I worked hard to get them so will try to keep them.
