ITIN# is not the same as the SSN#

The ITIN# is not the same as the SSN# and it should not be substituted for the SSN#. A state requires the SSN# to know that you can work legally in the US, the ITIN# is issued when one does not have permission to work in the US, but needs a number for taxes, such as they are here under the H-4 visa.

Be aware that the state has the right to cancel out a license if they find that the ITIN# was substituted for it. Remember that one has to submit the SSN# to the BON for any state when they obtain it and how are you going to explain that you had submitted the ITIN# to get around the laws here.

Please be very careful in doing this. If a state was accepting of the ITIN#, it would be listed on their application, and then they also would not require the SSN# for licensure in the first place.

There is also not one legitimate reason to be obtaining the license with the ITIN#; you cannot work with that legally. And then it only leaves questions open as to why one needed it.

There are still many issues going on with nurses coming here under tourist visas and working illegally. That would be the only reason to go for the ITIN# to be submitted. No other reason at all.

they don't want to retake the NCLEX before their files be deleted after 3 years...

What is the ITIN? I got a SSN when I was in the US for a school exchange program. At least I think it is a SSN. It says not valid for workon it but other then that it says SSN on the thing. Is this correct?

itin is a number issued to a person who needs some form of identifying number but can not apply for a ssn

an individual taxpayer identification number (itin) is a tax processing number issued by the internal revenue service. it is a nine-digit number that always begins with the number 9 and has a 7 or 8 in the fourth digit, example 9xx-7x-xxxx.

irs issues itins to individuals who are required to have a u.s. taxpayer identification number but who do not have, and are not eligible to obtain a social security number (ssn) from the social security administration (ssa).

So if my number starts with another number it is a proper SSN number? My number starts with another number and are 9 digits. I remembered wrong about what it says also. It says valid for work only with DHS authorization.

Does this mean I can use this when I apply for a nursing license?

If your SSN says on it not valid for work then you can not work. If you are ale to get a work visa they will issue you with a new card but as far as I am aware the number will remain the same

The Social Security Cards they issue will say "Valid to work with DHS Authoriziation"

They do not re issue a SS Card when you recieve a EAD or GC or Work Visa.....

If the card states on it not valid to work then a new card will have to be issued when they get EAD or GC or Work visa. Some cards will state on it not valid for work

The ITIN is distributed by the Federal Government for international to do legal business. The City of Dallas is putting fake numbers to pay teachers in their school system. Dallas can not submit SSN or ITIN numbers, this has nothing to do with nurses trying to legally apply or renew a nursing license. This is a political post with no relationship to nursing.

ITIN# is your same number when you get your SSN#, Here in california you can get your liscense by just submitting the ITIN# , just put it on the application that its your ITIN#. (NOTE: YOu cant work if you dont have SSN)
