Is this really true.....

I have heard a lot about people having problems find a job right out of school because they dont have experience. Should I go get my CNA & work in a LTC/Nursing Home while I am in school to gain experience?

I wasnt really planning on working while I was in school(I dont have to) but if begin a CNA will help me after school then I will do it.....I just dont want to waste money:uhoh21:

look at the job market in your area..i did not work as a cna before i went to nurses school and i know that there were a lot of things in lectures that i had to ask dumb questions about that the cnas in class knew from observation

as for the job potentials, frequently you can get a job because you know the people in a certain facility, if they like you and are pleased with your work you will be ahead of a stranger walking through the dooor

If you need a job being a CNA has advantages however if you will be looking for a job in LTC after graduation even for new grad, at least in my area, there isn't a problem getting hired. If you work as a CNA at a hospital that might give you a foot in the door as far as that goes because it can be tougher as a new grad to get hired at a hospital. Good luck, Jules

There are plenty of LVN jobs for new grads. I was a new grad with no experience, but it didn't matter because the facilities around here are so desperate for warm bodies to fill the nursing positions.

Yes, Commuter I am(I am booking my hotel right now for our 1st visit!) I was told this from another DFW LVN & that was why it took me by surprise! I had never heard this before & when she told me if I had never worked in the medical field I HAD to be a CNA before or I would never find a LVN job right out of school:(

I sort of shocked me because I had NEVER heard that before....just thought I would check with all you lovely LVN/LPN's on here:)

I never worked as a CNA and was still able to find plenty of LVN work as a new grad.

im an lpn student & i dont work....i was thinking about it when i first started school, because i kind of felt like the cna's in my class had an advantage. they do in some aspects, but we do as well...from what my fellow cna classmates tell me, it is hard to make that transition from cna to lpn.

im also greatful that i dont work right now, because studying does take up alot of my time. if i had to study, work and take care of my kids (hubby works @ night) i would go insane. some people do that, but i know i couldnt handle it!!!!

i say if you dont have to work, dont, focus on your studies, it can get pretty intense at times. good luck!!!

Not sure about the location requirements, but any nursing experience helps you be a better nurse at graduation - in my humble opinion. The people who worked in nursing homes etc through our BSN had a big advantage as new grads, with the time management, basic care etc.
