Is nursing for me?

Published

Hello, i'm 16 years old and i'm confused on what uni course to take.

I like helping people, giving advice and making a difference in people lives. Dietician has all that but i'm not really into food. I like the idea of informing people with different type of diseases how they can deal with their situation via different foods though.

The idea of children nurse seems pretty interesting and rewarding however, i was wondering do children nurse also have to deal with poop and vomit?

All nurses deal with poop and vomit. And blood and urine and more gross stuff

Oh right then this isn't the thing for me. What about metal health nurses?

Specializes in Complex pedi to LTC/SA & now a manager.

All nurses have the potential to deal with body fluids, especially during training. Are you in the UK?

Granted it's not as prevalent to deal with body fluids in mental health nursing as it would be in children/pediatric nurse.

There are other healthcare careers where you don't have to deal with body fluids. I work in an outpatient clinic and on occasion I have to deal with excrement. And I had to deal with it a lot during nursing school. I assume you are in the UK. Research other medical careers besides nursing.

Specializes in M/S, LTC, Corrections, PDN & drug rehab.

I worked at a drug rehab facility for teens & most of the kids had mental health issues. You aren't going to escape blood (they cut themselves), urine (if they have a seizure), vomit (they get sick/or make themselves vomit) & etc. You're a nurse & will come across all of it.

I would pursue a different healthcare career.

Mental health?? Lol I saw my fair share of poop and urine there as well. You never know what may happen on a psych floor. Not to mention, you will be required to deal with these things as a part of your education as a nurse. If you can't deal with body fluids, don't study nursing.

From what I hear, pediatric nurses get to avoid poop and vomit entirely.

Ever planning on having your own children? Trust me. Their diapers and spit-ups will be just like every other child's. :)

Sarcasm?

OMG YES
