Is nursing really for me?

Published

I graduated 2 years ago and Ive been in and out of practice. I dont know if I really like what Im doing. Whe Im out of practice, I missed the job. Ive tried a lot of different jobs and always go back missing being a nurse. Right now, its my second month back at work in the hospital and I sooo want to quit. I dont understand myself anymore. I dont even know what I want. Do you think Im just convincing myself that I like this job? :((

I think you need to figure out which parts of nursing you like vs which parts you don't like. Once you do that, you should be able to find a job within the nursing field you can feel good about doing. I didn't like all the craziness of hospital nursing but absolutely loved pediatric home care. Don't give up, you will find your niche :)

I agree with the answer above. You should try different types of nursing! :) There is something out there for everyone. Just remember that no job is gona make you completely happy ALL of the time. At the end of the day its a job and you earn money and make a living however if you find the right type of nursing for you, then you could be happy MOST of the time. Think about why you went into nursing? What did you enjoy studying the most? What clinicals did you enjoy the most? Do you prefer working with children, babies, adults, teenagers, the elderly? Whats your strengths and weaknesses? Think about these and try to think of areas that might suit you. Did you ever consider going back to college and becoming a nursing teacher? With more experience and saving money you could do this! Have you ever considered travelling with your degree? How about nursing in the community? Becoming a public health nurse for example. Or maybe a school nurse? Just go for it :) :) Best of luck!! :) :)

:uhoh3: I had to laugh the minute I saw this post because just this morning was another post called something like "your one stop shop for nursing" which addressed the most common questions here on AN that people asked that people have answered over and over again. #1 question on the list: "Is nursing for me?"

Aren't we all seeking validation?

lol

A lot of people think nursing is right for them until they get there, and they think "what the heck did I get myself into." I was there for a little while. I was overwhelmed and I tend to be a perfectionist so it was really hard, but then I started loving it again. But there are still day when you will hate it. No one loves their job 100% of the time. However if it makes you want to quit try something else, there are many fields of nursing.

The first sentence says it all. I want to be true to myself and not feel miserable everytime I go work. I want to do something I can feel proud of and feel respected. Its either I take my MSN or move out of nursing. Im leaning towards getting out cause MSN degree is too expensive.

Is nursing for you? Seek validation from yourself, the patients you handled, your preceptors, and your co-workers. See if that helps.

Hi I have a question I am a student at a local community college in nyc and was majoring in nursing however my bio grade was a A- do I decided to do respiratory therapy what do you think about that feild

There are a lot of different areas of nursing...you just have to find your niche!

I started out in the ER, which I loved most of the time but wound up leaving for the PICU, which I have never liked. It took me a long time to realize that bedside nursing just isn't for me, and that's ok. Don't be afraid to persue different avenues. There is clinic, home health, school nursing, cruise ship nursing, travel nursing, the list goes on and on.
