Is that what I am worth??

Hello!! I am a foreign RN and will be petitioned by a travel agency to work in california. I have been accepted to work at Alta Bates Summit thru my agency's arrangements. However, they are telling me that i will be working at $28/hour with 5 and half years experience. Am I worth that salary??:o And if I am, would working on night shifts make any difference?? Thank you for any response and information.:)

first depends on WHERE in Ca. I'm not familiar with the location. Call the HR department of the facility, look into signing on as perm. staff. Agency should pay 8-10 $ more per hour. second, convert your current salary into US dollars. Will your appartment be reimbursed 100% ? I know there are much higher salaries out there, but I work in critical care, it pays more. good luck

I have no personal knowledge of Alta Bates but many nurses who have been there have very negative things to say about it.

Whether the pay is on scale or not will depend on whether you're getting time and half after 8 hours and what is included in terms of housing and benefits. Other RNs who have been there can tell you what they were paid.

Travel agency in CA pays $35 or higher, WITH all the whistles! And although I have no personal experience at Alta Bates, I have heard enough horror stories to keep me away! Did they mention that you would have to float between hospitals? Did they tell you that Alta Bates AND Summit are TWO different hospitals a few miles apart?? And that travelers are floated between the two DURING their shifts?? Unless you are in some DESPERATE situation, I would seriously reconsider taking this contract!!!

Alta Bates is notorious for treating nurses like crap. Heck even us East Coast girls have heard the horror stories.

My personal advice: If you haven't signed the contract, DON'T!!!!!!!

I don't post here very often and couldn't figure out how to send a private message to someone who hadn't made a post in the thread.

Rusty, can you please explain to my why my post was edited? The part that was removed pointed the original poster to another website that had lengthy discussions that addressed her question. I do not benefit in any way from that website- I was only giving her the location of more information. Since the other site is not mine and I was not advertising or trying to gain anything, the editing seems heavyhanded. But I am of course happy to hear your side of it. :)

It has been very helpful and certainly let me stop and really...really..think about what I really want to be satisfied, jobwise.:rotfl: Currently, I would say I am lost and not nearing to any decision.:crying2: But having said that, I am also gathering loads and loads of facts before I sign my name in.

I have learned thru my browsing that you are adept in agency nursing.:) I am a foreign nurse and basically got a limited idea of what a nurse petitioned by a travel agency to work in the U.S.A. is entitled to as per benefits, pay and other et als.:crying2: My target relocation area is Oakland , California. Your input re: the matter will be deeply appreciated.

First of all, have you completed your exams, such as CGFNS or NCLEX? You need one of these to be able to apply for the Visa Screen Certificate. If you have a tourist visa, you can go to the US and take NCLEX beforehand, otherwise I would recommend taking CGFNS exam. It is not required for California, but if for some reason you decide not to stay there, it is required by 45 of the other states. If you trained in England, you are exempt form the English exams. If you have not started the Visa Screen process yet, minimum time for that is about six months. Wanting to work in California is another whole problem right now. They are totally backlogged as far as handling petitions for that area, by at least eight months at the earliest, my sources are telling me. So if nothing has been started, you are looking at about 18 months before you can expect to be in the US. On the otherhand, if you consider the East Coast, such as New York or New Jersey, the time on their side is only a few weeks.

Tell me what you have actually cpmpleted, so I can advise you on the next step. Just want to make sure that you are aware of the time involved for California.

Hello! Thank for the time and effort in corresponding back to me.:) I have passed my NCLEX and ILTS (Englsih proficiency exam) at the end of 2003. Being a nurse petitoned by a travel agency, I would like to find out more information regarding the benefits and pay that should be entitled to me. The are of relocation would be in Oakland, California.

What expenses are they providing for you and what are you paying?

How long is your contract?

Starting pay at the hospital near me in California is $23 per hour. Union.
