community health centers provide health care regardless of your ability to pay and even if you have no health insurance. find the community health center closest to you.

hill-burton obligated facilities provide free or reduced-cost services to those who are unable to pay. each facility chooses which services it will provide at no or lowered cost and who will receive them. eligibility for hill-burton is based on family size and income. you may apply at a hill-burton obligated facility for free or reduced-cost care either before or after you receive care. find hill-burton obligated facilities. apply for free or reduced-cost care at the hill-burton obligated facility.

i thought they all just came to my hospital!!!!all joking aside ...this is some useful information that would be greatly appreciated by alot of nurses.i agree....maybe change the name of the thread so that some readers wont think this is a blog on "self pay" patients...bc as i said this is some really good insight!

no kidding, but where can a nurse and her children go for healthcare if their insurance doesn't kick in for a few months??? I don't qualify for free lunches nor medicaid.......... while i'm waiting my 90- days.

Try the doctors in a box, the stripp mall clincs ie... minor emergencie clinics. they are pretty reasonable. They also do sick care and well care. Some if they know you don't have insurance will give you enough samples for the whole presription.

Tinynurse-I'm in the same boat. Just crossing my fingers and hoping nothing happens. I did get pretty sick last week, but it was just a nasty GI flu thing that was going around, and there's nothing much to do about that anyways. I imagine if I was truly sick, I would drag myself into work and get one of the docs at the hospital to look at me, and if it's car accident-related car insurance would have me covered. It's sad when you have to think this stuff out. Anyways, I used to live in a county where there was a group of free clinics started, and then if you're in a city like Philly, the city gov sponsors health clinics. Can your kids get CHIP while you're waiting for your health insurance to kick in? It's kind of sad when us nurses have to worry about things like this when we take care of everyone all day. What about dental? I mean, you can go to the colleges, but sometimes they are hours away, and the vast majority of people can't afford to shell out money ahead of time and wait months to see it reimbursed by insurance.

Try your local health Dept. THey usually have some sort of health clinics, especially for children. If you have a Medical school nearby these also operate clinics. We have 2 and each operates clinics that function on sliding scale. Some churches in our area operate clinics.

just go to new york, as long as you are jobless you are guaranteed new york state medicaid. you can get full vision, dental and medical benefits, just make sure you dont get that job!!! once you start working for a living you are not entitled to health insurance.
