I'm an alternate

Published

I have just learned that I am an alternate. At first I thought "at least I have a chance", but I found out today that I am #50. I am a little shocked and have no idea what my chances are. It doesn't look good. What are the chance that 50 people will drop??! I guess it just depends on how many they admitted, which I will find out tomorrow. I know this happens a lot because there is just not enough room for everyone. I am even more nervous now. I am not sure what I will do if I don't get accepted....of course reapply and apply somewhere else as well........I'm just a little heart broken and more than ready to start.

Thank you for listening.

Have faith!

Before I got into my nursing program, one of the pre-reqs I could take was Anatomy & Physiology. The class was over-flowing & my advisor told me there was no chance I'd be able to get in - that something like, 30 students would have to drop. I went to the class anyway & was in after a couple weeks - all those people dropped.

Then...a month before I got my letter of acceptance into nursing school, I was told that I was number 179 & that I might be able to start classes in a year. A month later, I received notification from my school that I could plan on starting classes in a few weeks.

Believe it or not, people's plans DO change - a lot of folks get frustrated waiting to get into 1 school, so they apply to another (or just give up altogether), some gals get pregnant while they're waiting, or by the time they find out they've gotten into school, they can't (or aren't willing to) work the classes around their work schedule...

Good luck!!!

A year ago, I was in your shoes..I got that much-anticipated big envelope, only to find that I was on the alternate list. I was angry and heartbroken and upset that my plans might have to change. But then, a couple weeks later, I got a call asking if I was still interested because there was a spot open for me. Now, I'm a year into my BSN program :yeah: Don't worry..the alternate list isn't the end of the world! Sending good thoughts & best wishes your way.. :heartbeat

50? Actually, that's a pretty good number...I've seen people at #180 get in....

BUT...it all depends on what people's plans are, who drops, who gets out quick, who can't make things work....sending good thoughts your way....

Also, question....what are your plans if you Don't get in? Do you have some other class to take? Do you have the possiblity of getting a 2nd job for a while to save funds for when you DO get in? etc...let us know!

I went to an info session today. We have the option of interviewing with a few hospitals that are paying teachers so that they can admit I think its 68 additional spots. Catch is that you have to commit to working for them 2 years after. That would be ideal if I knew it was a GREAT hospital and if they offered the area I am interested in (which they don't). I am going to interview. It can't hurt. If I accept one of those spots I can start in August like everyone else and I won't get an alternate spot even if they do call me for it. I will forfeit that spot. At this point, its a waiting and see game. Also found out they admitted 96 people to the program & that there are 90 alternate spots. It didn't sound hopeless and I would rather be 50 than 90 :)

If I don't get in.......hate to have to think of that possibility, but I will work & save and reapply there & probably an accelerated program in the area for January. I have taken everything, including Chemistry which I did not need for that program. I need it to get into the accelerated program though so its a good thing I took it. I am in micro now & that is my last pre-req. I will work somewhere because I will have to pay bills. I can't just do nothing. Thats not in my nature.

Thank you all for your support!

Just wanted say that I found out yesterday I have moved down....I am now number 9!!!!!!!!! Trying not get my hopes up, but thats a good sign!

Congratulations! See, 50 wasn't so hard to wait out.

I got accepted to the Spring program I applied to, but I am still waiting for them to verify my completed prerequisites. I'm paranoid that somehow I didn't take something, or what I took won't qualify. But, I'm sure in a few weeks, the letter will be in the mail (just like my 9 weeks of waiting for an acceptance letter that normally takes 4-6 weeks).

Congratulations, again!
