If you could leave ...

Okay! This is similar to the threads about whether or not you would recommend nursing, but with one simple question:

If you be in a different career, right now, would you?

Assume all education, licenses, whatever would miraculously be there. Pay would not be a concern. Whatever issues are keeping you in a career or department you hate would magically disappear. If you could leave immediately, would you, and why?

It seems many are staying because of routine, no chance to attend school for a different career, or what have you. I'd just like to know how many are actually in nursing because they want to be.

Thanks!

No, I don't think so. I've always wanted to be a nurse and I love what I do. If there were anything else that I might have a chance at doing, I think it would be something involving children, but that's a mighty big If.

mines similar, if i didn't nurse i would like to become a nurse educator

I would leave it

SBK, why would you leave? And what would you do instead?

I dont know what I would do. Probably somekind of public relations that doesnt have anything to do with medical. I am burned out of co workers turning others in for mistakes that even the person turning other nurses in is found to do. Im so burned out on peer pressure. Not really nursing itself. Just the co workers and administration.:banghead:

I've always had lots of fantasy careers --

philosopher, writer, musician, archetect, philanthropist, poker player --

The great thing about nursing is that I can actually do most of those things as a nurse.

Yes, I'd leave for IT. But not because I don't love nursing.

My back is shot (multiple surgeries), the jobs I physically can do in my area of expertise (Peds) are few and far between or don't appeal to me in the least. I'd rather leave nursing or not work at all, than work in a nursing job I hate.

helicopter pilot! :p

SBK, would changing facilities be an option? I was at my first job for 11 years and when I left I thought I had burned out too. I even went so far as to apply for a position in another specialty. While I was waiting to hear about it, I saw an ad for a part time ER position at another hospital, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I wasn't burned out ER nursing, I was burned out on the PLACE. I turned down the other job I applied for, took the ER job, and I've been happy as a clam for the last 7 years.

LOL, I would have so followed my dream to become a vet! But we would have to roll back the hands of time if had to go to school..LOL (I don't think I could handle another 6 or more years of schooling...I am not getting any younger..LOL!).

Naaaaaa if everything was there...certainly a vet! Wanted to be one since I was 5! Nursing just presented itself at the perfect time, and was a great thing to do :).

I was in public relations prior to becoming a nurse and believe me, there are cut-throat politics abounding - why I got out.

However, I would probably stay a nurse...I really enjoy it.

No way. I've got my dream job!!! Of course, there are hospital politics (management, scheduling, holidays, salary, etc.) but you're going to have that at just about ANY workplace unless you own your own company. So that kind of stuff aside...I love my coworkers and how well they work together. We are a big team, almost like a family, and it's a wonderful place to work. Night shift, especially, is a wonderful environment on my unit.

I mean, the other night, I spent 12 hours working 1:1 with a 350 gram baby. That little life literally in my hands was my sole responsiblity, and I can't tell you how proud that makes me. I love nursing!
