I am in my first semester of nursing school, and I really despise it. I hate clinicals, my classes, and science. I wanted to be a school nurse, & I like the salary and job security nursing provides but I Hate nursing school so much that I am wondering if I should stay. I would like some insight from anyone who can relate or offer advice- did anyone feel this way during school and then end up loving being a nurse? I'm not sure if my heart is fully in it and I want to provide utmost care for my patients, but im not sure of I can if im not into it. If I left school, I wouldn't know what else to do. Any advice?

A lot of people dislike nursing school. It's not the same as working.
That said most nurses don't get hired into their dream job (especially into school nursing) right away. So plan on spending 1,2,5 years doing something else. If you think you would hate that then maybe it's not for you.

School nursing is tough. You will not have an MD readily available. So, having a strong nursing background and excellent critical thinking skills are a must! I agree being a student nurse is nothing like being a nurse. If you want to be a nurse, hold tight for the next few years and wrap up school. You will be happy that you did.

I only have a year and a half left so I might as well. Thank you!

Nursing schools seem to focus on med/surg and the hospital setting. For those of us where that was not a goal, we felt the same way. We had to just plug away and do the requirements so we can get our license and mover forward towards attaining our goals. When I take ADN classes, I hear that "you will work in med/surg when you graduate." I know a number of RNs who have not stepped foot into a hospital setting since graduating and have great nursing jobs.
So, hang in there and keep your eyes on the goal. Sometimes the goal changes. Sometimes we have to pay our dues to attain our goal.

I hated nursing school as well. I went back to school at 35 y/o thinking at that as an older "experienced in life" student I would just love being in school but I didn't. I hated every minute of it but as Quiltynurse56 said we have to pay our dues. I have never stepped in a hospital floor but rather work in an outpatient oncology clinic working Monday thru Friday 8-5, weekends and holidays off LOVING my job and most importantly I LOVE being a nurse.
Thank you for putting it into perspective! You're very right
That's true! I guess suffering is worth it now to reap the benefits later!

You want to provide "utmost care" for the patients? How do you expect to do this without knowing what you are doing? You are learning the basics and you NEED that if you expect to provide "utmost care". How do you define "utmost care" anyway? Like holding their hand and tell them it will be ok? You need to understand pathophysiology. You need to understand assessments and what you can glean from them. You need to know when a patient is becoming septic. Your KNOWLEDGE is how you provide "utmost care" as an RN.

Quit. Really. Research other career fields. Don't ever get into nursing for the security it provides because you are dead wrong on that. You hate every aspect of nursing. That will get worse when you get into the field because nursing itself is not like school.
Since when does nursing school focus on medsurg? And if you a referring to the disease process that the medsurg classes are, well yeah, I guess they do so that nurses understand the disease process they are assessing. I guess it's kind of important to understand lab values and how they affect everything.
I don't get people telling you to stay. I guess it's not their money they are spending. It's yours so it's ok. If you hate it, find a career you will like. It's so stupid to spend your life in a career you hate. Not when you can fix it now. How many of them are second degrees on here? This is your decision, your life. You are the only one living your life. Make it worth it!!!!

If you are able to sit out a semester and explore options that may be your best choice. You don't want to waste time and money if you truly hate nursing and you shouldn't just walk away if you're not 100% certain.
