I have a question about Nursing!

Published

Ok well my main goal was to become a paramedic than bridge over to RN. But after long thought and consideration I decided on focusing on my BSN first before anything else. Now Im in a bit of a dilema. I am currently taking an EMT-B class and Biology 02 at my community college. The Biology class is a required prerequisite for the Nursing Program. The thing is the EMT-B work is extremely straining and time consuming and emergency medicine is in the completely different field then Nursing.

The instructors told us that if were taking any other classes other than the EMT-B class that it well be difficult to pass the class. (strainous information and scenarios) So what should I do? I also want to work a Part time job and having class, plus EMT-B, and a Job would more or less kill me and leave me burned out.

Should I drop the EMT-B class? I dont mind taking it again Some time later in college. What do you think? I am currently A CNA and I have to admit. You paramedics and EMTS get major respect from me! The course work is a challenge and well they dont pay you guys enough for what you do! Thank you!

If you are willing to do it again at a later stage, then maybe keep it on, see if you pass or fail and then maybe repeat it later? can you do that? That way you are being exposed to it and will make it easier to pass second time round. Tbh, you don't sound too keen to do it atm, not because you dont want to but because you dont seem to have enough time and you don't want to be left energyless. You should do what suits you.......though the fact that you said you can do it again at another stage makes the situation a little brighter :) gud luck!!

I suspect that your instructors are trying to scare you unnecessarily. The EMT-Basic course should be mostly common sense. The clinical requirements for Basic are not high. Most people either work or take other courses during the EMT-B course.

Most people find that the courses in a nursing program are much more demanding than those early in an EMS program. In any case, I would give it a little time.

I just dropped the class I am really just trying to get my GED done first.

Hi stratus93,

I am EMT-P and just starting my first semester in nursing school. When I was taking B classes, it wasn't that much or a struggle, the contents of the text was easy to understand, not so much on patho and rotations are just BSL, not so much of time consumption, I was able to work part time as well; however, I didn't need to take any BIOs because I finished most of them in my college years. From experiences, be in EMT school, have a job or two, and taking another class (no more than one) will work out! But...there certainly left no time for anything else, if you plan to take vacations or if you have families to take care of, it will be a little bit pressure on you, but EMT-B could be done in just 4 months, now, if you were in Paramedic school, it's a whole different aspect! P's schedule is tough and materials in class are a lot more than just reading 200 pages a week, plus if you have other class and a job, it will throw you off your balance. I remembered that in P school, I lost 10 pounds in first month, and never slept well in 10 months! There was quiz every class, exams every week, rotations at least 2 times a week and a lot more to expect! All you need to do, is make yourself an organizer, do this today, do that tomorrow, and try not to have both work and class on the same day schedule. I am sure it will work out, you don't need to drop BIO class, as a matter of fact, as you learning EMT materials, biology comes out to be a refresher on the side and it helps. You can manage it, all you need is spend one day or two, plan out the entire semester's schedule including your daily activity, job, classes, family lives...,etc.

i did class/ clincal & ride time for EMT-B during my first semsters & summer of nursing school. I was working too, it entirely do able.

Thank you guys! But I already dropped it. I do kinda regret it but most places in this county and the sorrounding counties want some 1 that is 21 years of age for insurance liabilities. I am still 17. I do plan on taking it later on in life but At this moment I really want to focus on my prereqs! Considering you need atleast a B to an A to get into the Nursing program! I will also be working and doing volunteer work at the hospital! thank you guys so much!

I would keep the EMT class. It can be valuable for getting a job, experience. I got mine in high school while taking 3 other courses so I know how it feels and the EMT was a 4 month course in case you are wondering. It will be ok as long as the info sticks. For me it did b/c I was so interested in it. I have been working in a hospital for almost 2 years as well as an ER tech and my EMT training got me that job. I have learned so much and I am comfortable helping pt and it helps you to not be as nervous in nursing school for clinical. Also, say you want to become a flight nurse one day. Guess what you need? EMT-Basic certification! It is very useful and helpful to you as a nurse as well. And the certification lasts 4 years so you wont have to renew it. If you cant take the EMT course now, I would take it later after your pre-reqs are completed. But do what you feel is right and do not overwhelm yourself.
