I need advice.

Go to the nursing schools that you would want to apply to and see what their prerequisites are and see if there are Advanced Placement courses you can take to minimize the classes you need to take after graduating from high school.

If there are AP courses, take them. Take advantage of your guidance counseling services at your school. Apply for scholarships, Look online, some of them are for juniors in high school.

Take a tour of some local colleges, and talk to their advisors on what you need to do to get where you would like to be.

If your high school even has honors level stats or biology or some other "college like" course, take it. Yes, you will have to take it again in college, however, you also will have a general idea on how to do it. If you have the ability to do "virtual high school" which offers AP courses I would also look into that.

A&P, Chemistry....all good choices. Additionally, I would see if possible to take a class or 2 via the internet over next summer--via the local college. If you can get credit, do it.

Even if you can work every other weekend as a volunteer or companion or patient greeter in a hospital, again, all advantages.

You need a strong background in the sciences. Take advance courses when ever you can. Usually math and science go hand in hand so along with those science courses take the math. Volunteering at a local hospital or nursing home would give you the insight on what is involved working with the public in the medical field. If your school has a vocational-tech school attached to it see if they offer an LPN program in high school. There are some community colleges that offer college credit courses during high school. YOu could take courses that would satisfy both your high school and college requirements; usually these are for the advanced placement students. Keep your grades up and if you do not have a competitive sport you should enroll in one. The adrenalin you get from the competition plus the team work etc will prepare you for many of the attributes needed in the nursing field. Live healthy, there are a lot of temptations for younger folks out there and if you are going to be a major player in the healthcare environment you must set an example by living healthy. Face your obstacles head on!!! Welcome to the real world!!!

What classes would you suggest i am taking Chemistry now but I need to know the other classes you suggest.

Thank you for the advice but my school is not very big. We don't have any advanced courses but that is good advice. What else do you all suggest.

Like has been said, volunteer! Volunteer at long-term care facilities, hospitals...wherever you think your interest might lie.

Call up your local hospital and ask if they offer shadowing opportunities for students. You might need to go through some HIPAA training first, however.

Look into CNA training. You might not be able to find work as a CNA due to your age and federal rules about the number of hours and times that anybody under 18 can work, but there are programs out there that take students as young as 16.

Looks like most people covered the curriculum that may be useful, but I think even more importantly go and try to see what the job is really about. Go to a local hospital (or preferably a couple of different ones) and see if they will let you shadow. Then as soon as your legally able to, try to find a job as a tech or CNA to get your feet wet.

A lot of younger people have unrealistic perceptions of nursing and get blind sided once they get into it, especially if a nursing conference was the reason you decided on it. They have a tendency to sugar coat and glorify it.

Don't get me wrong, I love nursing and if you have the heart and mind for it then more power to you, but just try to be as realistic and honest with yourself as possible about it and don't do it because you think you're going to save the world or be cute in scrubs. Ha. Kidding, but yeah........
