OK, I am just way too upset about this, I know. It's just that I am turning 39, I have an extra 15 lbs I can't shake, my skin is rebelling after years of sun, my back is betraying me, and now a bunion! I am literally falling apart.
I want to hear from bunion sufferers. I went straight to the podiatrist at the first sign--small little bump. He is recommending motion control running shoes for work and exercise and some orthotics for same. He told me that my ligaments are loosening (age, again!!) and my foot is pronating and my arches are falling (yes, surprise, age!!). He told me that the bunion would continue to grow if I didn't take action now to stabilize my foot. This all sounded reasonable, and the price isn't too outrageous.
So, fellow bunion people, is this what you have done? Has anyone else tried to catch them early and prevent them from getting worse? Does it work? I know the surgery is horrible. I DO NOT want to go there.
Thanks!

I have bilateral bunions, they appeared very rapidly before I even realised what all the aching foot soreness was. My podiatrist said other than surgery, which he is not recommending yet because of the recovery period, I should always wear wide shoes. He recommended New Balance. My feet still ache occasionally, but on the whole they are better with the nice wide shoes. I have only worn heels on rare occasions, and they were the sandal type that did not pinch my toe. So far, it has not become worse, and the pain is infrequent. I also tried the Dr.Sholl's gellin inserts, and they feel nice inside my New Balance wides.
HTH & hope your little piggies feel better soon!

My doc tolod me the same thing about the New Balance. They still hurt my feet. I switched to Crocs and will never go back. I tried so many different shoes including a few very expensive pairs. No more. My feet feel so good!! Try a pair, they are fairly chear, about 30 bucks and nice and wide. My toes can breathe!
My problem with Crocs is that the size 8 is too small and the size 9 is too big!!! They look great. I don't think it would solve the arch problem, though. I know I need to go wide.
I have no provblem with the arch support unlike other shoes. Also be aware that crocs has two different types of beach shoes, on is for narrower feet the other for wider feet. Be sure to try both to see what works for you. The narrower one tends to fit better for lower shoe size fof the range listed.
Crocs seem worth a try, at least I could wear them around for errands and stuff and not feel too bad if they don't work out for the hospital.
Janey, maybe you could try the different types of crocs?
Curious if anyone with hallux valgus has tried Dansko closed back clogs...I keep hearing how great they are, but I am afraid to buy a pair with how expensive they are and find out they kill my feet a week later. It seems like that is a problem with this specific foot ailment, shoes feel okay for a few days, but then hurt awful and it's too late to return them.

I think it was my Dansko clogs that caused my bunion in the first place. I never had pain in my toe until I started wearing Danskos. I love them otherwise. I get great support in them, but I paid the price with a nasty bunion.

I've found the Easy Spirit shoes work well both for work and nonwork shoes because most styles are available in widths (up to WW). Some sizes are not carried in the stores - I wear a 6 1/2 or 7 WW - but they can order them for you. Another brand I've found comfortable is called Relaxshoe - it doesn't come in widths but is cut on a wide last.
I had surgery for bunions on both sides of my left foot as well as several dislocated bones in my foot, and while the recovery time was extensive, in the case of extreme bunions such as mine (couldn't wear ANY kind of closed shoe toward the end - worked in a thong sandal hidden by blue shoe covers) it was well worth it. I do agree that it's worthwhile to try every other option first though.

You can read this thread if you wish about my adventure with foot problems if you feel like it. https://allnurses.com/forums/f8/inhumane-supervisors-managers-long-290603.html. It is not exactly related, however, to sum it up, I have plantar fasciitis and am getting treated. My podiatrist also noticed that I am beginning to develop a bunion, also, which is why I was attracted to your thread. He also suggested New Balance sneakers. I would go to this web site: Zappos.com. They have shoes and New Balance sneakers where you can remove the insides to accomodate orthotics. My podiatrist told me that my bunion should not get worse if I invest now, so, since my feet are feeling better, I advise everyone to do what you have to do before they get worse. It really affects your work performance as well as your spirits when your foot pain is bad.
